The research also reveals that most parents stop reading to their child by the age of eight.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/people\/tmc242\">Teresa Cremin<\/a>, Professor of Literacy and a leading expert on the benefits of reading for pleasure, says: \u201cResearch indicates that reading aloud to young people, without attendant work, is a key pedagogic and professional practice in fostering reading for pleasure.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIt is not an optional \u2018extra\u2019 activity, but every child\u2019s right to hear fiction, non-fiction and poetry read aloud with passion and pleasure.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2><strong>Threat to children\u2019s wellbeing<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-11932\" src=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/read-for-pleasure-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"reading for pleasure\" width=\"237\" height=\"158\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/read-for-pleasure-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/read-for-pleasure-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/read-for-pleasure.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 237px) 100vw, 237px\" \/>Publisher Egmont, which co-funded the research, says the steep decline in parents reading to children is a threat to wellbeing and could have a social impact in the long term. Studies have shown that children who think positively about reading are <a href=\"https:\/\/literacytrust.org.uk\/news\/children-who-enjoy-reading-and-writing-have-significantly-better-mental-wellbeing-their-peers\/\">less likely to report mental health problems<\/a> and reading for pleasure has a <a href=\"https:\/\/cls.ucl.ac.uk\/reading-for-pleasure-puts-children-ahead-in-the-classroom-study-finds\/\">greater impact on academic success than a parent having a degree<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Reading for pleasure can help us negotiate life<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Michael Morpurgo, author of War Horse, former Children\u2019s Laureate and Open University Honorary Graduate comments:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIt is vital that children, young people and all of us have access to stories which give us the knowledge, empathy and understanding we need to negotiate life. But just as importantly, we need to give children and their teachers and parents time to read.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Professor Cremin continues: \u201cSuch shared experiences offer rich reading role models, create \u2018books in common\u2019 in families and in classrooms, and help build communities of readers.
