{"id":12068,"date":"2019-03-14T14:50:48","date_gmt":"2019-03-14T14:50:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ounews.co\/?p=12068"},"modified":"2019-03-14T14:50:48","modified_gmt":"2019-03-14T14:50:48","slug":"bbc-honours-ou-in-50th-anniversary-celebrations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/around-ou\/bbc-honours-ou-in-50th-anniversary-celebrations\/","title":{"rendered":"BBC honours OU in 50th Anniversary celebrations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In an inspiring address marking the OU&#8217;s 50<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary celebrations T<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/mediacentre\/speeches\/2019\/tony-hall-ou?ns_source=twitter&amp;ns_mchannel=social&amp;ns_campaign=bbc_press_office&amp;ns_linkname=corporate\">ony Hall, director general of the BBC<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/about\/main\/governance-ou\/chancellor-and-pro-chancellor\">Martha Lane-Fox,<\/a> Chancellor of The Open University hosted a special reception to celebrate the unique OU\/BBC partnership, its achievements and the shared social mission of both National institutions.<\/p>\n<p>The Open University has always had an iconic place in the hearts and minds of those who believed in its social mission. Tony Hall was one such person. He opened his speech with a recollection of the first time he heard about The Open University while he was at sixth-form college and thinking about what a brilliant idea it was \u2013 education for anyone, whatever their background, whatever their circumstance. We are universal \u2013 we\u2019re here for everyone. The Open University \u2013 and the BBC \u2013 are two institutions that this country should be very proud of.\u00a0 I say that without a hint of complacency, but they are both phenomenally important to the fabric of the UK. Together, we believe that each one of us should have the same opportunities to learn. Together, we believe that we should all be able to wander through knowledge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tony Hall also highlighted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.open.edu\/openlearn\/nature-environment\/the-environment\/creative-climate\/earth-vision\/sir-david-attenborough-and-the-open-university\">how instrumental Sir David Attenborough was when<\/a>, in 1965 as the controller of BBC 2, he was given responsibility of making Jennie Lee\u2019s concept of The Open University into a practical reality \u2013 the OU is now a key part of her legacy.<\/p>\n<p>Today the OU\/BBC partnership enables the exploration of subjects that changes lives, that sparks imagination in millions of people and creates engaging content to further lifelong learning. All of which would not be possible without the support from The Open University and the involvement of its academics. \u201cWe\u2019re so proud of what this partnership achieves \u2013 and how it works.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Capturing the imagination of millions<\/h2>\n<p>Martha Lane-Fox expressed her pride at being the Chancellor of The Open University saying that it is \u201cthe best job in the world.\u201d She also offered thanks to all those who have been involved in the partnership.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_12072\" style=\"width: 384px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12072\" class=\" wp-image-12072\" src=\"https:\/\/ounews.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Martha-Lane-Fox-Chancellor-Open-University-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Photograph of Martha Lane Fox standing behind a lectern\" width=\"374\" height=\"250\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-12072\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Baroness Lane-Fox speaking at the BBC\/OU 50th celebration event<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cWe were the first university in the world to have the imagination and foresight to embrace the new technologies of television and radio. Our partnership with the BBC continues today enabling us to educate\u00a0and inspire the widest possible audiences with landmark programming such as Blue Planet II, Horizon and Coast.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are many people here tonight who have been or are part of producing some of the wonderful content we\u2019ve glimpsed from the show reels. I\u2019d like to thank them all\u2026 and a thank you Tony and BBC for helping us to make education open for all. We look forward too many more years of working together and changing lives.\u201d She also gave special thanks to Sir David Attenborough for all his support establishing the partnership almost 50 years ago.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/commissioning\/tv\/articles\/open-university\">Dr. Caroline Ogilvie, Head of Broadcast at The Open University,<\/a> said \u201cThe Open University\u2019s partnership with the BBC is all about inspiring learning.
