{"id":12473,"date":"2019-04-11T10:14:57","date_gmt":"2019-04-11T09:14:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ounews.co\/?p=12473"},"modified":"2019-04-11T10:14:57","modified_gmt":"2019-04-11T09:14:57","slug":"ou-digital-access-for-prisons-and-secure-hospitals-shone-out-in-the-guardian-university-awards-2019","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/around-ou\/university-news\/ou-digital-access-for-prisons-and-secure-hospitals-shone-out-in-the-guardian-university-awards-2019\/","title":{"rendered":"OU digital access for prisons and secure hospitals \u201cshone out\u201d in The Guardian University Awards 2019"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A project which provides digital access to study materials for students in secure environments, such as prisons and secure hospitals, has won the widening access and outreach category in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/education\/2019\/mar\/19\/the-judges-decision-finalists-for-the-guardian-university-awards-2019\">Guardian University Awards<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The award, which was presented to the OU team at the Guardian University Awards ceremony in London yesterday (10 April) was for the <strong>OU Secure Virtual Learning Environment <\/strong>(VLE), specifically for students in secure environments who have restricted internet access. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Secure VLE ensures\nstudents get an experience more equivalent to those studying in the wider\ncommunity and are better prepared for a successful return to society. In 2018,\nit offered 120 modules and 1,400 people from 150 UK prisons and secure units\nstudied with the OU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One\nof the judges, Claire Callender, Professor of Higher Education, UCL Institute\nof Education, University of London said: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cThe project is aimed at an incredibly vulnerable or under-represented group and yet it is a group that we know from all existing research can benefit enormously from higher education and the University has some very exciting plans for the future. This project absolutely shone out both in terms of its innovation, in terms of its reach and in terms of the target group.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Steve Rycroft, Head of Learning and Teaching Environments said: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cAt the OU we have a long history of supporting students who have been disadvantaged in their opportunities to access higher education.
