{"id":12601,"date":"2019-04-17T10:15:10","date_gmt":"2019-04-17T09:15:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ounews.co\/?p=12601"},"modified":"2019-04-17T10:15:10","modified_gmt":"2019-04-17T09:15:10","slug":"earth-from-space-a-unique-perspective","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/around-ou\/tv-radio\/earth-from-space-a-unique-perspective\/","title":{"rendered":"Earth From Space: a unique perspective"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A\npicture is worth a thousand words and this week\u2019s brand new BBC series made in\npartnership with The Open University shows how true the adage is. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Satellite\nimages from space are being used in <em>Earth\nfrom Space<\/em> to tell stories of life on the planet from a brand-new\nperspective, revealing new discoveries, incredible colours and patterns, and\njust how fast it is changing, as the series follows nature\u2019s greatest\nspectacles, weather events and dramatic seasonal changes.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/21-GOES-EARTH-low-Res-600x600.jpg\" alt=\"Photograph of An image of the whole earth from space.\" class=\"wp-image-12614\"\/><figcaption>An image of the whole earth from space. NOAA\/NASA<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Julia Cooke, lecturer\nin ecology in the school of Environment Earth and Ecosystem Sciences, was the academic consultant on <em>Earth from Space.<\/em> Speaking in our behind-the-scenes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.open.edu\/openlearn\/tv-radio-events\/tv\/dr-julia-cooke-on-being-academic-consultant-on-earth-space\">filmed\ninterviews<\/a> about\nher involvement she said, <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn the last few\ndecades the number of satellites that we&#8217;ve put up in the sky has increased\nenormously and so this series showcases some of the most interesting and\nextraordinary things we can see from space and what we can learn from that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p> <br>&#8220;Initially we met with the series and the episode producers, very early on, and at that stage we could make suggestions about perhaps other areas of research that were very new that they might not yet have heard of. &#8221;  <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMost of filming\nthen happened and we met the episode producers again and watched \u2018long cuts\u2019 to\nsee what footage they&#8217;d got and how they were putting it together and then we\ncould try and help find ways to explain the things that they wanted to say.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first of four weekly episodes <em>\u2018A New Perspective\u2019<\/em> is due to be broadcast at 21:00 on Wednesday 17<sup>th<\/sup> April on BBC One.&nbsp; It will show an elephant family struggling through drought, reveal previously unknown emperor penguin colonies from the colour of their poo and discover mysterious ice rings that could put seal pups in danger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/5-EFS-0107_20171029_DRONE_005_036-1050x591.jpg\" alt=\"BBC photograph of elephants\" class=\"wp-image-12615\"\/><figcaption>A group of elephants cast shadows on the dry plains of Kenya&#8217;s Samburu National Reserve.
