This is just one of the questions PhD student Vincent Deguin, 28, and his fellow<a href=\"http:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/research\/themes\/space\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" planetary scientists at The Open University (opens in a new tab)\"> planetary scientists at The Open University<\/a> are exploring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vincent is working on pioneering\nresearch into the earliest stage of planet formation, building and testing\nequipment that will help to explain a subject which is still relatively\nmysterious.<br>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u2018It\u2019s\na life-changer\u2019<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Though Vincent was always fascinated\nby science and the solar system, the idea of doing this as a profession seemed\nout of reach while he was growing up. Despite not getting the best grades at\nschool, Vincent was able to prove his value in the lab during an internship\nwith the OU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This allowed Vincent to see first-hand the cutting-edge research of the University, which inspired him to move from his hometown in Bordeaux, France, to return full-time as an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/postgraduate\/research-degrees\/degrees-we-offer\/doctor-of-philosophy-phd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"OU PhD student (opens in a new tab)\">OU PhD student<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vincent said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cThe OU science facilities and equipment are truly impressive, but it\u2019s also the people you\u2019re supported by and connected to that make this such a unique and fantastic studying opportunity. The fact that the OU really is open to anyone interested in learning is something that I\u2019m grateful for \u2013 it\u2019s a life-changer.\u201d &nbsp;<\/p><cite><br><br><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Celebrating 50 years of changing\nlives <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Vincent features as part of a new photography collection taken by renowned British <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chrisfloyd.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">photographer Chris Floyd<\/a>, to mark the OU\u2019s 50th Anniversary. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Travelling around the UK to capture the remarkable stories of the OU today, Floyd\u2019s 10 portraits have been released alongside a never seen before collection of images from the OU\u2019s archive.
