Prior to Middlesex University, he\nwas Acting Vice\u2013Chancellor at The Open University and previously Pro\nVice\u2013Chancellor for Research and Quality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Professor Blackman has extensive leadership experience in higher\neducation. Having graduated from Durham, he returned to the University to hold\npositions including the Head of the School of Applied Social Sciences, Director\nof the Wolfson Research Institute and the Dean of the University\u2019s campus in\nStockton\u2013on\u2013Tees. He has also served as Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences\nand Law at Teesside University and Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Social\nSciences and Law at Oxford Brookes University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Pro-Chancellor of The Open University, Malcolm Sweeting, said: <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI am delighted that Professor Tim Blackman has been appointed as The\nOpen University\u2019s new Vice-Chancellor. He brings a detailed understanding\nof the complexities of the sector and the opportunities and challenges that\nthese bring to our unique University.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Commenting\non his appointment, Professor Blackman said:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt is a tremendous honour and\nprivilege to be appointed as the next Vice-Chancellor of The Open University.\nThe OU is one of the UK\u2019s best inventions. It ranks with the NHS and National\nParks as a visionary idea, bringing the opportunity to learn and study to\nanyone, whatever their circumstances. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe OU\u2019s staff are remarkable,\ncreating inspiring courses designed and taught to demanding standards. Its\nstudents are amazing and achieve, often against the odds, qualifications that\ntransform their lives. I look forward to working with the whole OU community to\nadvance the university\u2019s mission and purpose, which are just as pioneering and\nrelevant today as they were 50 years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Malcolm Sweeting continued:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI would also\nlike to take this opportunity to say a very big thank you to Mary Kellett for\nher calm and inspired leadership of the OU since she took over this role in\nApril 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMary embodies\nthe very best qualities of the OU and has led us not just through periods of\nsignificant change, but also of celebration in our fiftieth year. Her approach\nhas been central to keeping the OU radical and relevant and positioning us\npositively for the future. Mary is a true ambassador for the OU and the vital\nrole education plays in improving lives and society.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences and Royal Society of Arts,\nProfessor Blackman has also served as an assessor for Social Policy and Social\nWork in the 2014 UK Research Excellence Framework exercise.\n\nProfessor Blackman\u2019s annual salary will be\n\u00a3270,000 with an annual supplement of circa \u00a337k in lieu of pension. \n\n\n\n<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Open University has appointed Professor Tim Blackman as its next Vice-Chancellor who will take up his new role on the 1 October.
