{"id":12991,"date":"2019-05-16T16:08:48","date_gmt":"2019-05-16T15:08:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ounews.co\/?p=12991"},"modified":"2019-05-16T16:08:48","modified_gmt":"2019-05-16T15:08:48","slug":"future-business-stars-rewarded-by-ou","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/around-ou\/future-business-stars-rewarded-by-ou\/","title":{"rendered":"Future business stars rewarded by OU"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The winning businesses\nin this year\u2019s Open University Student Entrepreneurship Competition range from a social enterprise\nfocussed on helping former military personnel transition back to civilian life\nand work, to a web platform which helps nervous drivers cope with stressors. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now in its fifth year, the competition attracted\nthe interest of over 100 students, spread across each of the university\u2019s\ndisciplines of study.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Funded by<a aria-label=\" Santander Universities (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.santander.co.uk\/uk\/santander-universities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> Santander Universities<\/a>, the <a aria-label=\"Student Entrepreneurship Competition (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.open.edu\/openlearncreate\/course\/view.php?id=3685\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Student Entrepreneurship Competition<\/a> has two categories, with the winners receiving up to \u00a36,000 to grow their business idea. The New Business Challenge supports OU students who have a start-up ready to launch, or an existing business they wish to develop further. The Innovation Award supports students who have an innovative idea with serious potential.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shortlisted entrants were invited to pitch their idea to a panel of judges including Santander Relationship Director, Nicholas Davies; Johnny Englishby of Milton Keynes Business Improvement District; Carolin Decker-Lange and Henry Lahr of The Open University Faculty of Business and Law; and Suzanne King from The Open University Finance Department.  Winners were presented with their awards at a recent ceremony, held in the OU Business School.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Robert Wilson, Chair of the Judging Panel said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cThere is clearly an entrepreneurial spirit running through the OU student body.&nbsp;These projects have been very rewarding to work on and I look forward to continuing to realise the impact they have on our students. I look forward to seeing their businesses develop in the future.\u201d <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Innovation\nAward<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Winner<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>First place in the Innovation Award, with\nan excellent demonstration of an innovative product, goes to Alan Bellis with\nhis cable tie saver. Alan used an old Dragon\u2019s den clip in his video pitch which was an\nintegral part of explaining his innovation. Alan\u2019s cable tie saver reduces up to 80% of the plastic waste from cable\nties by making the offcut reusable. Alan is currently working on\nprotecting his intellectual property for the idea and identifying the best\nroute to market. He receives \u00a33000 to help develop his ideas. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Second Place<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Andy Warin, a\nmaths teacher, received \u00a32000 and second place in the Innovation Award. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Andy has created the \u201cTrig Triangle\u201d, a product which aims to\nteach formulas and equations using \u201ccognitive load theory\u201d.&nbsp; Andy\u2019s idea has multiple applications as a\nteaching tool. The judges were impressed by his market research and the excellent\nproduct demonstration. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Third Place<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The 3<sup>rd<\/sup> place winner of the\nInnovation Award was Esther Ng, a medical doctor from Singapore\nworking in Oxford, who received \u00a31000. Esther is studying Engineering with a\nparticular interest in Artificial Intelligence. She is developing a programme\nwhich will aid the diagnosis of common to more severe illnesses, with the aim\nbeing to relieve pressures on the NHS 111 line. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Santander-awards-2019L-2-1050x538.jpg\" alt=\"Entrepreneurship Award Winners with their certificates\" class=\"wp-image-13000\"\/><figcaption>Student Entrepreneurship Competition Winners, pictured with members of the judging panel<br>L-R: Nicholas Davies, Laurence Moore, Robert Wilson, Tracey Field, Susie Boutal, Alan Bellis, Suzanne King, Carolin Decker-Lange<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>New Business Challenge<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Winner<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The First Place prize for the New Business Challenge went to Laurence Moore of <a aria-label=\"Project RECCE (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/projectrecce.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Project RECCE<\/a>, who receives \u00a36000. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This social enterprise enables veterans to offer peer-support\nthrough transition to civilian life, qualify for a new career and at the same\ntime supports the reduction of the national construction skills shortage and helps\nalleviate the housing crisis. Initially supported via grant-funding and\ncrowd-funding, Project RECCE intends to become self-sufficient beyond year 3\nthrough strategic partnerships with national employers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On top of winning the OU Student Entrepreneurship competition,\nProject RECCE has also been awarded significant funding from the CITB\n(Construction Industry Training Board). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Robert Wilson said: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cLaurence\u2019s pitch of his business model and personal story of his own transition after military life really won over the panel. We believe that he has the drive to make this worthy cause a sustainable enterprise and look forward to supporting him and Project RECCE as they grow. We\u2019ve also supported Laurence in submitting to the Santander National Entrepreneurship Awards and wish him all the best.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Second Place<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Tracey Field received \u00a34000 for her business, <a aria-label=\"Confident Drivers (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/confidentdrivers.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Confident Drivers<\/a>, a self-help and information website for nervous drivers. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Based on eight techniques commonly used in the management of\nstress and nerves Tracey has created audios, videos, exercises, theory and tips\nspecifically for nervous drivers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The judging panel was impressed by the market research that Tracey\ncarried out and also the attention to detail that she gave to the needs of her\ncustomer segments, which included individual drivers as well as driving\ninstructors. Tracey\u2019s business aims to have a significant impact on the mental\nwellbeing of drivers but her business model could also be adapted to suit other\nscenarios where people feel stressed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Third Place<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Susie Boutal received \u00a32000 for her business model, <a aria-label=\"A Space for Living (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pg\/A.Space.for.Living\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">A Space for Living<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Susie has built her business to fit around her home life and wants to help others do the same via her \u201cbusiness in a box\u201d.
