An OU student has scooped a top prize for his achievements in microbiology.<\/p>\n

Michael Howard, 62, from Worcestershire, has been awarded the Undergraduate Microbiology Prize by the Microbiology Society.<\/p>\n

He’s\u00a0been studying for an Open Degree with The Open University, focusing on biology<\/a>, since March 2012, and was commended for the excellent progress he’s been making towards completing his qualification.<\/p>\n

He was presented with his award at the OU degree ceremony in \u00a0Birmingham by Vice-Chancellor, Peter Horrocks<\/a>, and Dean of the Faculty of Science, Professor Hazel Rymer<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Michael said:<\/p>\n

“I\u2019m really enjoying studying biology and pushing the boundaries on what I can achieve. It\u2019s great that the skills I\u2019ve learned throughout a career in an office \u2013 analysis, planning, research, and teamwork \u2013 are also useful to a career as a scientist.\u00a0I want to say many thanks to the Microbiology Society and The Open University for encouraging and supporting my new-found enthusiasm for biology.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The Microbiology Society awards the prize each year\u00a0to an undergraduate student in each qualifying institution who performs best in microbiology in the second year of a Bachelor\u2019s degree.<\/p>\n
