{"id":13435,"date":"2019-07-18T17:15:59","date_gmt":"2019-07-18T16:15:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ounews.co\/?p=13435"},"modified":"2019-07-18T17:15:59","modified_gmt":"2019-07-18T16:15:59","slug":"business-and-laws-high-achieving-students-and-alumni-are-honoured","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/business-law\/business-and-laws-high-achieving-students-and-alumni-are-honoured\/","title":{"rendered":"Business and Law\u2019s high-achieving students and alumni are honoured"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Open University Business and Law Schools celebrated their highest achieving students in a joint awards ceremony in Milton Keynes on Friday 12 July.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The annual awards, bigger and better this year as the OU celebrates its 50<sup>th<\/sup> birthday, commended the exceptional achievements of high-calibre Business and Law students and graduates from the previous academic year. They also honoured some of the Business School\u2019s alumni who have made an outstanding contribution to an organisation or to society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year\u2019s winners were selected from thousands of candidates in dozens of countries. They were congratulated by Devendra Kodwani, Executive Dean of the Faculty of Business and Law (FBL) and Head of the OU Business School, together with fellow academics Mark Fenton-O\u2019Creevy and Simon Lee, at the OU\u2019s Walton Hall campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Professor Kodwani said: \u201cIt\u2019s a real privilege to meet so many of our talented Business and Law students and to celebrate their achievements and successes. These winning students have all distinguished themselves as the highest achievers in their qualification and fields with a real determination to succeed.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;We are also immensely proud of the achievements of our alumni who have demonstrated significant contributions to society, community or business. In this, the OU\u2019s 50<sup>th<\/sup> year, I wish all these deserved winners my warmest congratulations on their achievements and for continued success in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Open University Business School (OUBS) winners<\/h2>\n<p>The <strong><em>MBA Graduate of the year<\/em><\/strong> is Rob Crellin who is Head of Operations for one of the world\u2019s fastest-growing and dynamic Alternative Investment Fund Managers, Rokos Capital. Jamahl was one of the stars of a group project at HMP Foston Hall in Derbyshire, while Ben worked in Citizens Advice for one day a week for most of the module and reduced his working hours to four days a week so he can attend, at some financial cost to his family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Best team contribution to Open Justice:\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>William Pengcheng Gu, Aimee Foster, Hannah Vo and Alexandra Priestly<\/p>\n<p>Visit the OULS website for <a href=\"http:\/\/law-school.open.ac.uk\/study\/student-awards\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">more information on the OULS winners<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Alumni Achievement Awards<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"attachment_13461\" style=\"width: 206px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13461\" class=\" wp-image-13461\" src=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Gerard-McGurk.jpg\" alt=\"Gerard McGurk\" width=\"196\" height=\"262\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-13461\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Gerard McGurk, Alumni of the year<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Gerard McGurk MBE who works for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office received the honour of <strong><em>Alumni of the year<\/em><\/strong><em>.<\/em> He is a diplomat with 30 years\u2019 foreign policy and leadership experience who is currently based at the British Embassy in Madrid. Gerard provides strategic direction for the delivery of high-quality consular services and real-time crisis responses across 37 diplomatic posts located in 17 countries from Portugal to Turkey. He was responsible for design and delivery of the overseas response to the Monarch Airlines collapse in 2017, returning 89,000 passengers from 34 locations. Gerard, who graduated with an MBA in 2012, is a member of The Open University Business School\u2019s Alumni Council.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>Highly Commended<\/strong><\/em> in the Alumni of the Year category were Marianne Fennema, Gwyneth Letherbarrow and Carlo Stasi.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The awards also recognised the achievements of Tillmann Henssler, one of only 33 business school graduates worldwide honoured by AACSB International, the world\u2019s largest business education alliance, as the <a href=\"https:\/\/ounews.co\/business-law\/business\/oubs-alum-tillmann-henssler-honoured-as-2019-aacsb-influential-leader\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">2019 Class of Influential Leaders<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Open University Business and Law Schools celebrated their highest achieving students in a joint awards ceremony in Milton Keynes on Friday 12 July.
