The next 10 years is critical in order to meet the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/sustainable-development-goals\/\">UN\u2019s sustainable goal 4 &#8211; education for all<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/pcf9.org\/\">PCF9<\/a> provided the platform on which partnerships have been forged, commitments made and a reinforced understanding of the vital roles everyone must play.<\/p>\n<p>The conference heard from several of the leading authorities in open distance education including <a href=\"https:\/\/ounews.co\/around-ou\/university-news\/pcf9-discussing-the-future-of-education-and-lifelong-learning\/\">Lord David Puttnam,<\/a> the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.col.org\/news\/items\">Commonwealth of Learning<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/ounews.co\/around-ou\/sarah-brown-calls-for-innovative-financing-for-education\/\"> Sarah Brown<\/a>, speakers from Open Universities all over the world &#8211; UK, India, Nigeria, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Indira Gandhi National, Botswana, Sri Lanka, Helsinki and Mauritius \u2013 \u00a0and a host of practitioners from around the global. But possibly the most startling figure was presented during <a href=\"https:\/\/gordonandsarahbrown.com\/2019\/09\/educational-opportunity-is-key-to-everything-sarah-brown-tells-conference\/\">Sarah Brown\u2019s speech<\/a>. She told PCF9 that on average a refugee is a refugee for 17 years. Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll our conversations should now be superseded by a path that leads us to making Open Distance Learning the new norm &#8211; the future of education is ours to claim. From sending course material and study kits via the post to today harnessing mobile learning, bringing learning opportunities to the students wherever they are in the world. Everything the OU does is designed to be as flexible as possible, to fit into students\u2019 lives. It is this ethos that will not only help students in the UK but also in some of the most disadvantaged regions of the world.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>A committed advocate of lifelong learning <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Professor Kellett reinforced the commitment of The Open University to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Actively advocate the role of lifelong, quality, open distance education in addressing the education challenges faced.<\/li>\n<li>Sharing practice in research and teaching, as well as exchanges in expertise in learning analytics, OER, curriculum and courses.<\/li>\n<li>Moderate our language from referring to \u201924,000 disabled students\u2019 to \u2018differently able \u2019<\/li>\n<li>Actively build out, in partnership, our teacher education programmes <a href=\"http:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/about\/international-development\/projects-and-programmes\/tessa-teacher-education-sub-saharan-africa\">TESSA<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/about\/international-development\/projects-and-programmes\/tess-india\">TESS- India<\/a> that have supported millions of teachers and educators across India and Sub-Saharan<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As the bagpipes played and the sun set on PCF9 there will be an inevitable reflection on the enormity of what lies ahead and responsibility of all those who attended. \u00a0The Edinburgh statement will serve as a reminder until PCF10 in 2022.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"PCF9 2019 Highlights\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/vSpyXwW3mg0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As the ninth Pan-Commonwealth Forum closed, there was a renewed sense of urgency about the global education crisis.
