{"id":14139,"date":"2019-11-20T10:02:32","date_gmt":"2019-11-20T10:02:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ounews.co\/?p=14139"},"modified":"2019-11-20T10:02:32","modified_gmt":"2019-11-20T10:02:32","slug":"ou-researcher-develops-tech-set-to-transform-political-debates","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/science-mct\/ou-researcher-develops-tech-set-to-transform-political-debates\/","title":{"rendered":"OU researcher develops tech set to transform political debates"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">An OU researcher has developed a new, innovative, digital platform to harness public engagement during televised election debates.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/kmi.open.ac.uk\/people\/member\/anna-de-liddo\"><span style=\"margin: 0px; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Dr Anna De Liddo<\/span><\/a><span style=\"margin: 0px; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">, Senior Research Fellow in the OU\u2019s Knowledge Media Institute, created the audience feedback tool in collaboration with political scientists <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ahc.leeds.ac.uk\/media\/staff\/240\/professor-stephen-coleman\"><span style=\"margin: 0px; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Professor Stephen Coleman<\/span><\/a><span style=\"margin: 0px; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> and <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ahc.leeds.ac.uk\/media\/staff\/378\/dr-giles-moss\"><span style=\"margin: 0px; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Dr Giles Moss<\/span><\/a><span style=\"margin: 0px; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">, and typography researcher <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ahc.leeds.ac.uk\/design\/staff\/522\/paul-wilson\"><span style=\"margin: 0px; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Paul Wilson<\/span><\/a><span style=\"margin: 0px; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> from the University of Leeds.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/democraticreflection.org\/\"><span style=\"margin: 0px; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Democratic Reflection<\/span><\/a><span style=\"margin: 0px; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">, a web application which can be accessed on desktop computers and mobile devices, allows the audience of a live event to instantly express their views in real-time.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Designed as part of a joint, three-year project, funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, known as <\/span><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/edv-project.net\/2017-ukelectiondebates\/\"><span style=\"margin: 0px; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Election Debate Visualisation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"margin: 0px; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">. The project explored how citizens responded to and evaluated televised election debates.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Beyond social media sentiment<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The app goes beyond social media sentiment, engaging audience members in critical thought about government decision-making and reveals viewers\u2019 conscious and unconscious beliefs.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Dr De Liddo said: <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"margin: 0px; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cDemocratic Reflection enables users to interact with the political debate in a truly personal and immersive manner, allowing them to express their spontaneous reactions, reflections and feelings over the ongoing debate before they can be biased by group dynamics.\u201d <\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Using a tried and tested methodology, Democratic Reflection captures audience reactions, such as citizens\u2019 trust, democratic entitlements and nuanced emotional reactions. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Voters were able to trial the platform during the first political debate, broadcast by ITV, on Tuesday (19 November).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">As the British public settled in to watch the long-awaited debate between the Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, 100 voters, who declared themselves as undecided, engaged in the lively discussions using Democratic Reflection. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The selected voters accessed the app and were presented with a set of 10 statements, in the form of digital cards, designed to capture their feedback and reactions.\u00a0 Whilst watching the debate on a large screen and listening to the party leaders\u2019 arguments, they were asked to select statements on their mobile screen that reflected their feelings at any moment during the debate. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">By selecting the statements, participants in the trial were able to comment on each speaker, whether their arguments or policies made sense, were relevant to the voter or made a difference.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Personalised analytics &#8211; the data behind the app<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The system recorded the selected statements and gathered the results to produce personal analytics on the user interaction, which will remain completely anonymous. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">However, users were able to access their own personal analytics to reflect on their engagement with the debate. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Dr De Liddo explains: <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"margin: 0px; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cWe analyse the feedback given and present it to the individual users as personalised analytics, allowing a far deeper understanding of both the discourse and their own feelings and opinions towards it. This interaction, both immediate and enabled in a private space, allows the user to go way beyond preconceptions and manipulations, including our own inherent biases.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Stephen Coleman, Professor of Political Communication at the University of Leeds, adds: <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"margin: 0px; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cNot everyone finds it easy to make sense of political debates.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cThe new real-time response app allows viewers to say what they\u2019re getting out of the debate, and what\u2019s confusing or annoying them \u2013 while they are watching it.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cWe think that this has potential to provide vital democratic feedback from the audience to the politicians and broadcasters.\u201d <\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The project team will produce an anonymised report to better understand the audience interaction, highlighting analytical narratives, which will be published in the New Year after the general election.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The platform has wider application and the project team are now exploring the use of Democratic Reflection as a tool to support peace building and peace education in developing countries. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">For more on Democratic Reflection visit <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/democraticreflection.org\/\"><span style=\"margin: 0px; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">https:\/\/democraticreflection.org\/<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An OU researcher has developed a new, innovative, digital platform to harness public engagement during televised election debates.
