{"id":15384,"date":"2020-04-30T16:23:02","date_gmt":"2020-04-30T15:23:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ounews.co\/?p=15384"},"modified":"2020-04-30T16:23:02","modified_gmt":"2020-04-30T15:23:02","slug":"how-ou-students-are-making-a-difference-during-global-pandemic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/student-stories\/how-ou-students-are-making-a-difference-during-global-pandemic\/","title":{"rendered":"How OU students are making a difference during global pandemic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>OU students work so hard and the university is incredibly proud of them for studying while juggling full-time jobs, childcare and other responsibilities.<\/p>\n<p>On top of that, many have been playing a supporting role in the fight against Coronavirus, helping local and wider communities.<\/p>\n<p>From working on the frontline to creating resources to help with home schooling, here are just some of the ways OU students have been supporting others.<\/p>\n<h2><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-15451 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/ounews.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/J995-OU-student-support_AW-individual-paramedic-243x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"243\" height=\"300\" \/>Frontline key workers\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Across the UK, OU students have continued in their roles as key workers, including delivery drivers; warehouse staff; shop workers; carers; teachers; paramedics and nurses, with many working additional hours.<\/p>\n<p>Examples include final year student Katie:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI am a final year OU student on my last TMA! Currently working frontline staff for the NHS in the community also, juggling lots but pushing through.\u201d (@katie_harrington)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Newly qualified community nurse Juliette:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI&#8217;m a newly qualified Adult Nurse and I&#8217;m working frontline as a community nurse.\u201d (@juliettehook2)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-15456 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/ounews.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/J995-OU-student-support_AW-individual-community-nurse-150x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"300\" \/>Warehouse worker Lucy:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI work in a warehouse for a pharmaceutical company that makes paracetamol, nurofen and hand sanitisers. I feel honoured to be a part of the team that&#8217;s still working through all of this with such a huge staff shortage!\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/lucerose_\/\">@lucerose_<\/a>)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Welsh ambulance service worker Lou:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI work for the Welsh ambulance service and study full time with the OU. Everyone who is working at this time from NHS staff, delivery drivers, supermarket workers, postmen and women, childcare workers everyone is amazing and you all deserve the world for still carrying on.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And teacher Siany:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI\u2019m a key worker teaching so I\u2019ve been on a rota working to look after the key worker children. I am about to start online tutoring for some of my children (private tutoring children) and a closed group for my Rainbows, posting activities every week.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-15452 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/ounews.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/J995-OU-student-support_AW-individual-volunteers-296x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"296\" height=\"300\" \/>NHS volunteers<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Putting food packages together, transporting medication to the vulnerable, offering counselling and translation services \u2013 OU students have been helping the NHS in a whole variety of ways.<\/p>\n<p>Amazing stuff like this:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI&#8217;m a NHS responder and volunteer counsellor at a NHS hospital. Doing all this whilst working full time and studying at OU!\u201d (@twoloveharts)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Making global connections is a vital part of the process:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI am helping the NHS translating from Italian into English any relevant evidence base on Covid-19 that has not been published in English.\u201d (@_the_philosopheress \u2013 OU Translation Studies graduate)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-15455 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/ounews.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/J995-OU-student-support_AW-individual-PPE-150x150.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/>A brilliant example of the resourcefulness of our students in providing much needed equipment:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI work for a dental lab and because dentists have stopped working we have adapted our 3D printer to make PPE full face masks, which we send out to hospitals, care homes and any other organisation.\u201d (@duncanjessop)<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2><strong>Content creators<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>With lots of parents now having to manage home schooling (and often working from home too), some of our students have been hard at work creating content to try to help make those home school sessions a little easier.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-15453 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/ounews.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/J995-OU-student-support_AW-individual-for-kids-166x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"166\" height=\"300\" \/>Love this from Holly:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cMy day now includes creating online content daily for families to access, to dropping off resources to families, putting together food packages to our most vulnerable families, and checking in weekly with our 100+ families with SEN young people.\u201d (@holly.eh)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Physics student Sam has been busy creating space videos for 7 to 11-year-olds:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI am a Physics student with the OU and an aspiring Medical Physicist. I have made some space-themed science videos aimed at 7 to 11-year-olds (KS2).
