{"id":16018,"date":"2020-07-15T11:37:57","date_gmt":"2020-07-15T10:37:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ounews.co\/?p=16018"},"modified":"2020-07-15T11:37:57","modified_gmt":"2020-07-15T10:37:57","slug":"new-ou-apprenticeships-to-train-leeds-nurses-of-the-future","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/education-languages-health\/new-ou-apprenticeships-to-train-leeds-nurses-of-the-future\/","title":{"rendered":"New OU apprenticeships to train Leeds nurses of the future"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Open University has joined forces with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leedsbeckett.ac.uk\/\">Leeds Beckett University<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leedsth.nhs.uk\/\">Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust<\/a> to create a new gateway to a career in nursing.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the Trust\u2019s Future You career development programme, a new apprenticeship route has been launched, providing both experienced and aspiring healthcare workers with the practical skills and qualifications they need to start a new career as a Nursing Associate or Registered Nurse.<\/p>\n<p>Students on the programme are employed as Trainee Nursing Associates within the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and will combine study for a Foundation Degree at either The Open University or Leeds Beckett with work placements across a range of specialities.<\/p>\n<p>This is followed by a year working as a Nursing Associate, developing skills and practice. Students may then progress to the two-year Apprentice Nurse programme, leading to a BSc (Hons) Nursing degree and Registered Nurse status.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-16027 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/shutterstock_98508269-1-scaled-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"505\" height=\"336\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/shutterstock_98508269-1-scaled-1.jpg 2560w, https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/shutterstock_98508269-1-scaled-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/shutterstock_98508269-1-scaled-1-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/shutterstock_98508269-1-scaled-1-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/shutterstock_98508269-1-scaled-1-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/shutterstock_98508269-1-scaled-1-2048x1366.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 505px) 100vw, 505px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The first cohort of students will begin in September, with a second intake starting in January 2021. More than one hundred applications have already been received.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Balvinder Johal, Head of Business Development (Health) at The Open University, said:<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cWe are delighted to be part of this exciting collaboration.
