{"id":17338,"date":"2021-01-28T10:00:06","date_gmt":"2021-01-28T10:00:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ounews.co\/?p=17338"},"modified":"2021-01-28T10:00:06","modified_gmt":"2021-01-28T10:00:06","slug":"ou-assists-fifa-in-creating-safeguarding-in-sport-diploma","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/education-languages-health\/sport\/ou-assists-fifa-in-creating-safeguarding-in-sport-diploma\/","title":{"rendered":"OU assists FIFA in creating safeguarding in sport diploma"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Open University (OU) and FIFA have today announced the launch of the FIFA Guardians Safeguarding in Sport Diploma \u2013 a major new global education programme designed to strengthen and professionalise safeguarding standards across football.<\/p>\n<p>In line with FIFA\u2019s long-term commitment to professionalise and embed child and adult safeguarding standards across the game, the course is a landmark step in sport and provides the 211 FIFA member associations with a dedicated interactive educational resource to develop safeguarding best practice.<\/p>\n<p>The five online courses will also be open and freely accessible at no cost to other learners that work, volunteer, support or play sports and want to learn more about safeguarding. If all five courses are successfully completed, they will be awarded the FIFA Guardians in Sport Award by the OU.<\/p>\n<p>Developed by FIFA, the OU and global safeguarding experts, practitioners and academics in the field, the FIFA Guardians Safeguarding in Sport Diploma is a complete open learning experience that will be available in English, French and Spanish.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/people\/bo355\">Ben Oakley<\/a>, Professor of Sports Performance Education at The Open University, said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-17380 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Ben-in-Norway-003-253x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"144\" height=\"171\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Ben-in-Norway-003-253x300.jpg 253w, https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Ben-in-Norway-003.jpg 720w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 144px) 100vw, 144px\" \/>\u201cTogether with FIFA and a reference group of safeguarding experts, we have designed a course which can be used across the world and will benefit a wide audience. The Diploma and Award will help build the capacity of those responsible for safeguarding in sports and support a wider cultural change in organisations, highlighting safeguarding as far more than just a compliance activity. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWe\u2019re thrilled to have worked with FIFA and the wider team on this exciting step towards better safeguarding practice.\u201d <\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Speaking about the new programme, Kathryn Leslie, Head of Safeguarding at FIFA, said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cEvery child and adult around the world has the right to play football in a safe and supportive environment, free from harassment and abuse. In line with FIFA\u2019s commitment to safeguarding in football and protecting young people in the game, this new programme developed by FIFA Guardians will provide an important and dedicated resource to educate and professionalise safeguarding and embed best practice throughout football.
