The Open University has won five awards at this week’s Learning on Screen Awards<\/a>, which for the past 15 years has showcased the best\u00a0educational film and television.<\/p>\n

Three of the OU’s BBC co-productions, David Harewood: Psychosis & Me<\/em><\/a>; BBC Ideas: OU Playlist<\/em><\/a>; and 8 Days: To the Moon and Back<\/em><\/a>\u00a0celebrated wins, with the latter also being presented with the overall, prestigious Premier Award<\/strong>. The OU’s free learning site, OpenLearn<\/a> was a winner too, with its educational video made with Tilt Productions<\/a>, ‘Intimate, not intimidated: It\u2019s time to talk about sex and disability<\/em><\/a>‘ taking home the Education Film (University) Award.<\/p>\n

8 Days: To the Moon and Back<\/h2>\n

Awards:<\/strong> Creative Reuse Award and Learning on Screen Premier Award<\/p>\n

8 days, 3 hours, 18 minutes, 35 seconds. That\u2019s the total duration of the most important and celebrated space mission ever flown \u2013 Apollo 11, when humans first set foot on the Moon. It was a journey that changed the way we think about our place in the universe. The feature-length film, 8 Days: To the Moon and Back<\/em> was created to mark the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission. Using previously classified cockpit audio, it gave a unique insight into the astronaut\u2019s fears and excitement.<\/p>\n

Academic Consultant and Professor of Planetary Science and Exploration, Mahesh Anand<\/a>, commented:<\/strong><\/p>\n

“The significance of the Apollo 11 mission cannot be overstated and it is one of the biggest achievements of humanity. At The Open University, we have a rich tradition of carrying out world leading space research and it is our partnership with the BBC that allows us to further extend our reach to engage and educate learners across the world through the co-production of programmes such as 8 days. On behalf of the entire team I would like to thank you all for choosing us for this award.”<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

“High-quality and typically slick, in particular praised its use of audio and CGI.”<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

David Harewood: Psychosis and Me<\/h2>\n

Award:<\/strong> Broadcast Award<\/p>\n

At 23 years old, David Harewood had a psychotic breakdown and was sectioned. As he puts it, he \u2018lost his mind\u2019. On World Mental Health Awareness Day 2017, David took to Twitter and spoke publicly about his experiences for the first time. He was overwhelmed by the response. Psychosis and Me tells the full story \u2013 to piece together what happened to him and help others understand what it\u2019s like to experience psychosis.<\/p>\n

Academic Consultant and Associate Head of School, Dr Sarah Vicary<\/a>, commented:<\/strong><\/p>\n

The partnership gives the OU the opportunity to showcase our research and academic experts, with videos including: I went from prisoner to PhD<\/a><\/em>; The power of quiet leadership<\/a><\/em>; How stories shape our minds<\/a><\/em>; Three invaluable tools to boost your resilience <\/a><\/em>and Could you be suffering from ‘plant blindness’?<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n

It\u2019s Time to Talk about Sex and Disability<\/h2>\n

Learning on Screen Awards 2020 – Winner<\/p><\/div>\n

Award:<\/strong> Educational Film (University) Award<\/p>\n

OU’s free learning site, OpenLearn<\/a> worked with Tilt Productions to create a film to capture the work carried by The Open University Sexuality Alliance<\/a>. In the film, six people with life-limiting conditions discuss sex, intimacy and relationships.<\/p>\n

Academic Consultants, Dr Sarah Earle, Director of Health & Wellbeing and Dr Maddie Blackburn<\/a>, Visiting Fellow, commented:<\/strong><\/p>\n

“We were (both) so delighted to win this award for ‘Intimate Not Intimidated: it\u2019s time to talk about sex and disability’,\u00a0 but especially for all of the young people with life-limiting\/life-threatening conditions that contributed to the filming and spoke so candidly about their lives.”<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
