{"id":19686,"date":"2021-11-10T13:03:17","date_gmt":"2021-11-10T13:03:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ounews.co\/?p=19686"},"modified":"2021-11-10T13:03:17","modified_gmt":"2021-11-10T13:03:17","slug":"lifelong-learning-proving-the-power-to-transform-lives-at-any-age","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/student-stories\/lifelong-learning-proving-the-power-to-transform-lives-at-any-age\/","title":{"rendered":"Lifelong learning: Proving the power to transform lives at any age"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Achieving career change, aiding self-belief or keeping up an active mind \u2013 just some of the many reasons our students give us for taking up study as we celebrate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.festivaloflearning.org.uk\/get-involved\/lifelong-learning-week\/\">Lifelong Learning Week<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019re joining forces with the <a href=\"https:\/\/learningandwork.org.uk\/\">Learning and Work Institute<\/a> to promote the value of lifelong learning, something that\u2019s very much part of our DNA at the OU. The week includes activities and awards to mark personal achievements and encourage learning.<\/p>\n<p>Returning to learning made a huge difference to OU student James Aston. The 33-year-old works part-time as an advisor and mentor with Herts County Council alongside studying for a BSc in Environmental Science with the OU.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_19732\" style=\"width: 235px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19732\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-19732\" src=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/James_Aston_trees-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"James Aston\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/James_Aston_trees-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/James_Aston_trees-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/James_Aston_trees.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-19732\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">James says he&#8217;s a &#8220;different person&#8221; through learning and part-time work.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>James has autism and welcomes the helpful support he receives from his mentor, thanks to the Disabled Students Allowance, which enables him to stay on track.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0He said<em>:<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em> \u201cI had an awful time at school, my diagnosis of autism came prior to entering secondary school and I really struggled and had no support. <\/em><em>I could not cope with the pace of work, or any creative work, and just switched off and had no motivation to apply myself, especially as I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>James began with the OU by taking an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/courses\/do-it\/access?ps_kw=open%20university%20access%20course&amp;cid=sem-7551142525&amp;gclid=EAIaIQobChMI2NO7zqeL9AIVjT6tBh3GoApmEAAYAiAAEgKjHPD_BwE&amp;gclsrc=aw.ds\">Access Course<\/a>, after a former work colleague recommended he give study a try. Now he\u2019s onto his fourth module and says he is a different person.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>\u201cI did very well on that Access Course. I knew it wasn\u2019t going to be easy, but it did make me realise that maybe I was much more capable than school made me feel.\u201d<br \/><br \/><\/em><em>He also took part in one of Herts County Council\u2019s Step2Skills programmes and recently impressed audiences with a presentation to 120 people.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0James says<em>:<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>\u201cBefore, I was doing nothing apart from going to social groups. I was feeling depressed and didn\u2019t think I could live a fulfilling life. Now I have things to focus on and self-belief. I\u2019m working, volunteering and studying towards my degree.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>\u201cI do really believe in lifelong learning. I\u2019ve got a taste for learning now; when I complete this degree, I feel there is still more to learn.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2>Flexibility provided the key<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Sonia Milki is a trainee maths teacher in London and completed an OU degree at the age of 50, having decided to retrain and switch careers when children came along.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_19734\" style=\"width: 248px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19734\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-19734\" src=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Sonia-Milki-CAS000809-custom-thumbnail-0-238x300.jpg\" alt=\"Sonia Milki\" width=\"238\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Sonia-Milki-CAS000809-custom-thumbnail-0-238x300.jpg 238w, https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Sonia-Milki-CAS000809-custom-thumbnail-0-813x1024.jpg 813w, https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Sonia-Milki-CAS000809-custom-thumbnail-0-768x968.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Sonia-Milki-CAS000809-custom-thumbnail-0.jpg 1220w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 238px) 100vw, 238px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-19734\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sonia is close to her dream of becoming a Maths teacher.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>She gained a BSc (Hons) in Mathematics and its Learning in July this year. Sonia says:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI was determined to overcome my fear of maths by taking on the challenge of studying for a maths degree with The Open University. This was one of the best decisions I could have taken. I chose the OU for its flexibility. With the children, I couldn\u2019t have attended a brick university as it wouldn\u2019t work.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During Lifelong Learning Week a conference will be highlighting and looking at how to improve literacy and numeracy, ESOL and digital skills, seen as key to adults\u2019 life chances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sonia says she herself was not confident with maths whilst studying for GCSE and A-levels at school and did not do as well as she hoped.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;<em>As I have grown older and worked in the school environment, my love for maths has been ignited with the desire to want to teach others. Considering I was an average student at school and college, especially in maths and English, I was determined to overcome my fear of maths by taking on the challenge of studying for a Maths degree with The Open University.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>She stresses the importance of learning functional maths. &#8220;<em>As a department we are working to equip these students with a functional maths qualification to experience the true value of the maths skills they can apply in real-life situations.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;I would encourage every adult no matter how low\/high they feel about their maths skills to engage in some kind of brain-training puzzle games, as I have found from my experience, that some kind of mental activity involving numbers and letters keeps the brain sharp and wanting to learn more.<\/em>&#8220;<\/p>\n<p>Learning more has no age limit as 93-year-old Roy Palmer proves.
