{"id":19966,"date":"2021-12-01T15:06:54","date_gmt":"2021-12-01T15:06:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ounews.co\/?p=19966"},"modified":"2021-12-01T15:06:54","modified_gmt":"2021-12-01T15:06:54","slug":"killer-in-the-car-park-forensics-the-real-csi-returns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/science-mct\/killer-in-the-car-park-forensics-the-real-csi-returns\/","title":{"rendered":"Killer in the Car Park &#8211; Forensics: The Real CSI returns"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The programme that gives viewers unique access to the work of forensic scientists is making a return to our screens.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Forensics: The Real CSI<\/strong> is co-produced by The Open University and the BBC and the series continues with series 2 (episode 7) <em>Killer in the Car Park<\/em>, which airs <strong>Monday December 6 at 9pm on BBC2<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/people\/ck4657\">Dr Claire Kotecki<\/a>, Lecturer at the <a href=\"https:\/\/stem.open.ac.uk\/\">Faculty of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics<\/a>, at the OU, was part of the team that advised the show\u2019s producers, she says anyone thinking about a career in forensics should definitely watch the series:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe Real CSI opens a window into an investigative world that is so often hidden behind the newspaper headlines.\u00a0 It gives a unique insight into the science behind the investigations and the dedication of the investigators who work in this field.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Working with the BBC as an academic advisor on this series for the OU has provided a fascinating opportunity to contribute to a programme that has the potential to educate and inspire its viewers, enabling a greater understanding of what it really means to work in this field and the complexities of investigating serious crimes.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>Following a trail of digital evidence<\/h2>\n<p>In the forthcoming episode, police respond to a call of a shooting in a car park. As dusk sets in, crime-scene coordinator Simon Flanaghan attends to find a car set back from the road, with multiple bullet holes and two men dead inside.<\/p>\n<p>A specialist ballistics team is called in to establish how many shooters were involved and where the gun was fired from. Meanwhile, homicide detectives from West Midlands Police work to establish a prime suspect and secure warrants to locate and arrest him.<\/p>\n<p>Continuing to investigate the suspect\u2019s movements after the incident, detective Lisa Shepherd follows a trail of digital evidence, trailing the suspected getaway vehicle to a shopping centre in Birmingham.<\/p>\n<p>Digital, DNA and ballistic forensics combine with forensic accounting to paint a detailed picture of the murder and suggest a surprising motive.
