{"id":19989,"date":"2021-12-08T11:28:17","date_gmt":"2021-12-08T11:28:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ounews.co\/?p=19989"},"modified":"2021-12-08T11:28:17","modified_gmt":"2021-12-08T11:28:17","slug":"new-theory-about-alien-life-subject-of-latest-bitesize-video-for-bbc-ideas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/science-mct\/new-theory-about-alien-life-subject-of-latest-bitesize-video-for-bbc-ideas\/","title":{"rendered":"New theory about alien life subject of latest bitesize video for BBC Ideas"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A brand new short film is now available to view on the award-winning BBC Ideas website called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/ideas\/videos\/are-we-thinking-about-alien-life-all-wrong\/p0b6vpk4?playlist=made-in-partnership-with-the-open-university\">Are We Thinking About Alien Life All Wrong?<\/a><\/p>\n<p>With the OU\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/people\/mgfp3\">Dr Mark Fox-Powell<\/a> providing academic consultancy, Professor Brian Cox explains the \u2018panspermia\u2019 theory \u2013 how alien life could spread around the Universe.<\/p>\n<p>This new theory, which has yet to be proved, has scientists intrigued and Professor Cox explains in the video, with the aid of easy-to-follow animation, how life exists throughout the Universe and that it could be transported through space from one location to another.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_20012\" style=\"width: 352px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20012\" class=\" wp-image-20012\" src=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Main-image-How-big-is-our-Universe-300x211.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"342\" height=\"241\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Main-image-How-big-is-our-Universe-300x211.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Main-image-How-big-is-our-Universe.jpg 732w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 342px) 100vw, 342px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-20012\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">How big is our Universe?<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"BodyA\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">The other recent bitesize video that the OU has contributed to BBC Ideas is another narrated by Brian Cox called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/ideas\/videos\/how-big-is-our-universe\/p0b2dl5c?playlist=made-in-partnership-with-the-open-university\">\u2018How Big is Our Universe\u2019<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"BodyA\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">The OU academic consultant on that film was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/people\/ajn3\">Professor Andrew Norton<\/a>, he said:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"BodyA\"><em><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">\u201cIt was hugely enjoyable to work with Pierangelo Pirak at Pomona Pictures to produce the short film called &#8216;How big is our Universe&#8217;. Our idea was to revisit the classic &#8216;Powers of Ten&#8217; video made by the Eames Office in the 1970s, and bring it up-to-date for the 21st century by including new information and new views of the Universe that were not possible 50 years ago. The film nicely complements several of the episodes of &#8216;Universe&#8217; with Brian Cox \u2013 in particular those focussing on the Sun and stars, and on the Milky Way. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"BodyA\"><em><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">&#8220;Hopefully this short film will encourage viewers to watch the TV programmes, if they\u2019ve not already done so, and to explore the range of courses and qualifications offered by the OU in the area of Astronomy. Our introductory module SM123 Physics and Space is a great way for anyone to learn more about galaxies, stars and planets and embark on their own journey to begin to understand the Universe.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>BBC Ideas is a collection of short, digital films that aim to inspire new thinking and fresh perspectives across a broad range of topics and contemporary issues.
