{"id":20377,"date":"2022-02-03T17:37:53","date_gmt":"2022-02-03T17:37:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ounews.co\/?p=20377"},"modified":"2022-02-03T17:37:53","modified_gmt":"2022-02-03T17:37:53","slug":"ou-bbc-co-pro-reveals-the-fiercely-competitive-world-of-elite-figure-skating","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/education-languages-health\/sport\/ou-bbc-co-pro-reveals-the-fiercely-competitive-world-of-elite-figure-skating\/","title":{"rendered":"OU\/BBC co-pro reveals the fiercely competitive world of elite figure skating"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A fascinating look into the competitive world of figure skating comes to our screens this weekend, on the newly re-launched BBC Three.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/connect.open.ac.uk\/health-wellbeing-and-sports\/freeze-skating-on-the-edge\"><strong>Freeze: Skating on the Edge<\/strong><\/a>, is an Open University\/BBC co-production that follows young athletes from across Britain over the course of a year, as they battle through skate-offs, qualifiers and international competitions to try and win a place on team GB ahead of this month&#8217;s Winter Olympics.<\/p>\n<p>The series is in eight parts with the first airing on <strong>Saturday 5<sup>th<\/sup> February <\/strong>at<strong> 9pm <\/strong>on<strong> BBC Three<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Academic consultants, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/people\/ch5997\">Dr Caroline Heaney<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/people\/jp6933\">Dr Jessica Pinchbeck<\/a>, both Senior Lecturers in Sport and Fitness at the OU, commented:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cFreeze: Skating on the Edge offers a unique insight into what it takes to be a top-level British ice skater exploring the physical, emotional and financial costs and the highs and lows of being an athlete. In Oxford, a lift goes wrong for new pairs team Harry and Lydia, and upcoming ice-dance talent Billy goes in search of a perfect partner.<\/p>\n<p>In episode two, the squad are left reeling after a shock announcement whilst elite skater Kristen is on a comeback mission after a spinal injury threatens to end her career on the ice.<\/p>\n<p>Episode three sees Britain\u2019s elite skaters go head-to-head in the ultimate skate-off. Reputations are laid on the line and with the Olympic Qualifiers on the horizon, the stakes couldn\u2019t be higher.
