It\u2019s a poignant statement given his death, aged 69, this week after an 18-month battle with cancer.<\/p>\n<p>And the OU\u2019s Dr Frank Monaghan says it\u2019s as applicable to his art as it was to his life. In an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.open.edu\/openlearn\/languages\/more-languages\/linguistics\/david-bowie-identity-creativity\">article on identity and creativity<\/a>, Dr Monaghan, of the Department of Applied Linguistics and English Language, takes a look at Bowie\u2019s constant evolution as an artist and one of the most influential musicians of his era.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8216;Scars that can&#8217;t be seen&#8217;<\/strong><br \/>\nBowie\u2019s last single, <em>Lazarus<\/em>, highlights an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.open.edu\/openlearn\/history-the-arts\/culture\/music\/lazarus-david-bowies-bio-obituary\">attitude to a death he was almost certainly expecting, says Professor Jan Draper<\/a>, of the OU\u2019s Department of Nursing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKnowing that he was dying of cancer at the time he wrote the song and indeed made the video, Bowie poignantly foretells his death.
