{"id":22112,"date":"2022-10-06T08:30:16","date_gmt":"2022-10-06T07:30:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ounews.co\/?p=22112"},"modified":"2022-10-06T08:30:16","modified_gmt":"2022-10-06T07:30:16","slug":"black-history-month-the-ous-race-and-ethnicity-hub-shows-past-and-present-ideas-of-race-and-racism","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/around-ou\/black-history-month-the-ous-race-and-ethnicity-hub-shows-past-and-present-ideas-of-race-and-racism\/","title":{"rendered":"Black History Month: the OU\u2019s \u2018Race and Ethnicity Hub\u2019 shows past and present ideas of race and racism"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Open University\u2019s OpenLearn is drawing people\u2019s attention to Black History Month (BHM) through its \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.open.edu\/openlearn\/race-and-ethnicity-hub\">race and ethnicity hub<\/a>\u2019 to \u00a0help people understand historic and contemporary ideas of race and racism.<\/p>\n<p>It was developed after the Black Lives Matter movement in 2020 and draws together a collection of existing and new free resources including articles, videos, audios, timelines and courses.<\/p>\n<p>To highlight BHM, the hub explores the themes of race, racism and ethnicity\u00a0and serves as a showcase for the research undertaken by OU academics across the core faculty areas within The Open University.<\/p>\n<h2>How ideas of race alter decisions past and present<\/h2>\n<p>The aim is to show how ideas of race throughout history and today can influence the interactions and decisions made by individuals and organisations.<\/p>\n<p>Topics range from society to science, money and business to nature and the environment, health to history and the arts.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Marcia Wilson, Dean of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion at the OU, said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cBlack History Month provides everyone with the opportunity to gain knowledge about events that have largely been omitted from the curriculum in schools and it also gives us the opportunity to challenge the history that is often presented as factual information.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cBlack history is vast and rich to the extent that one month cannot do it justice. That is why \u2018The Race and Ethnicity Hub\u2019 is so important as it contributes to our education all year.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cBlack history is not separate from British history \u2013 it <\/em><strong>is<\/strong><em> British history and a great opportunity to celebrate achievements and learn about events that changed the world.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>The Benin Bronzes<\/h2>\n<p>Find out what led to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.open.edu\/openlearn\/history-the-arts\/history-art\/art-loot-and-empire-the-benin-bronzes\">Benin bronzes<\/a> being dispersed around the world and the treatment of the Benin people; or read about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.open.edu\/openlearn\/education-development\/race-and-ethnicity-hub\/a-focus-on-misogynoir-the-anti-black-forms-misogyny-black-women-experience\">\u2018misogynoir\u2019<\/a>, what it means and how it affects Black women.<\/p>\n<p>If you are an educator, read the article on including diversity in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.open.edu\/openlearn\/education-development\/education\/including-diversity-race-ethnicity-and-culture-your-teaching\">race, ethnicity and culture<\/a> in your teaching.
