{"id":22417,"date":"2022-11-14T10:20:23","date_gmt":"2022-11-14T10:20:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ounews.co\/?p=22417"},"modified":"2022-11-14T10:20:23","modified_gmt":"2022-11-14T10:20:23","slug":"openlearn-marks-uk-parliament-week-with-new-social-change-course","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/arts-social-sciences\/openlearn-marks-uk-parliament-week-with-new-social-change-course\/","title":{"rendered":"OpenLearn marks UK Parliament Week with new \u2018social change\u2019 course"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If you want to know how to make political and social change then The Open University\u2019s OpenLearn platform has the answer.<\/p>\n<p>In celebration of the annual UK Parliament Week, from 14-20 November, which the OU partners with, OpenLearn is highlighting a new course designed for the young and old titled: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.open.edu\/openlearn\/society-politics-law\/introduction-making-political-and-social-change\/content-section-0?active-tab=description-tab\"><em>Introduction to making political and social change<\/em><\/a><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The free course consists of ten hours of learning and gives essential background to help you get started by providing examples of inspirational people who have made an impact within and on the exterior of traditional UK parliamentary politics.<\/p>\n<p>It will tell you:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What qualities you might need to bring about change<\/li>\n<li>How change is made within the UK Parliament, the devolved Parliaments in Scotland and Wales and the Northern Ireland Assembly<\/li>\n<li>How you can engage with the governments across the UK<\/li>\n<li>How <em>you<\/em> can make a change<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>By studying the course people will be able to recognise some of the global challenges that interest them, understand the workings of UK political institutions and their role in change, and how they can be a changemaker.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/people\/dt6888\">Dr Dan Taylor<\/a> is a lecturer in Social and Political Thought at The Open University\u2019s Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS), he said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cMy job is to teach people to think about politics and how democracies can adapt to the new global challenges of our times.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThis new course is a great introduction for people wanting to learn how the political systems across the four nations work and \u2013 all importantly \u2013 how to go about making a difference.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Last year the OU created the <a href=\"https:\/\/fass.open.ac.uk\/sites\/fass.open.ac.uk\/files\/files\/politics\/Changemakers%20Guide.pdf\">Changemakers: a Guide to Making Political and Social Change (open.ac.uk)<\/a> in association with UK Parliament Week.<\/p>\n<p>Changemakers can be from any walk of life such as footballer Marcus Rashford who successfully campaigned for the government to act on the need to end childhood food poverty. As a result, the government offered vouchers for meals for children in the school holidays.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/people\/pjl264\">Dr Patrina Law<\/a>, Head of OpenLearn, said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cCampaigners don\u2019t have to be high profile, campaigners can be our neighbours, friends, children or acquaintances down your street.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWe live in a world of multiple challenges \u2013 political, social, health-related, environmental and economic.
