{"id":22698,"date":"2022-12-22T10:44:17","date_gmt":"2022-12-22T10:44:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ounews.co\/?p=22698"},"modified":"2022-12-22T10:44:17","modified_gmt":"2022-12-22T10:44:17","slug":"zimbabwe-project-to-improve-education-of-women-and-girls-receives-fcdo-praise","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/education-languages-health\/education\/zimbabwe-project-to-improve-education-of-women-and-girls-receives-fcdo-praise\/","title":{"rendered":"Zimbabwe project to improve education of women and girls receives FCDO praise"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Open University\u2019s global development project, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.open.edu\/openlearncreate\/course\/index.php?categoryid=602\">SAGE \u2013 Supporting Adolescent Girls\u2019 Education<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 was recently visited by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) who fund the project through UKAid. The initiative was praised for its positive impact on women and girls in Zimbabwe.<\/p>\n<p>SAGE, which began in 2018, seeks to address the barriers in accessing education faced by girls in Zimbabwe by offering an accelerated non-formal literacy and numeracy skills programme for over 13,200 marginalised adolescent girls (aged 10-19).<\/p>\n<p>These girls have either never been to or have dropped out of school, and include girls with disabilities, young mothers, married girls, girls from the Apostolic community, girls from minority ethnic communities, and girls engaged in labour.<\/p>\n<p>As well as focusing on girls\u2019 educational development, the programme supports the development of girls\u2019 self-efficacy and life skills through\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/plan-international.org\/youth-empowerment\/champions-of-change\/\">Plan International\u2019s Champions of Girls\u2019 Education<\/a>\u00a0programme.<\/p>\n<p>To date,\u00a0<strong>3,539<\/strong>\u00a0girls and young women have graduated from SAGE, and transitioned onto clear pathways to further training, income generation, or are being supported to enter into education.<\/p>\n<p>Following her visit to a learning hub in Harare, Alicia Herbert OBE, FCDO Director of Education, Gender and Equality, remarked:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cOne of the most difficult things in my job is to talk to a girl who has never been to school. It shows a potential that has been snapped away. But the most rewarding thing about my job is talking to girls who are back in school and starting to build their lives. That\u2019s what we saw today.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Ben Cattermoul, Team Leader of Human Development and Inclusion at FCDO Zimbabwe, added:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cInspiration is the right word to describe how you are working with girls under difficult circumstances. Fantastic programme to see and an investment in girls\u2019 education.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/people\/lc23854\">Liz Chamberlain<\/a>, project lead and Professor of Primary Education at the OU, commented:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;The SAGE OU team are delighted with the positive feedback from the recent FCDO visit. It is testament to the collaborative work across the SAGE consortium that is enabling girls and young women to access learning and succeed.&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The learnings from the SAGE project are\u00a0contributing an evidence-base around Non-Formal Education (NFE) for\u00a0Zimbabwe\u2019s Education Sector Strategic Plan and\u00a0have directly contributed to the\u00a0Plan International Zimbabwe Country Strategy.
