{"id":22768,"date":"2023-01-17T09:00:45","date_gmt":"2023-01-17T09:00:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ounews.co\/?p=22768"},"modified":"2023-01-17T09:00:45","modified_gmt":"2023-01-17T09:00:45","slug":"new-framework-for-nursery-practitioners-shaped-by-ou-research","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/education-languages-health\/new-framework-for-nursery-practitioners-shaped-by-ou-research\/","title":{"rendered":"New framework for nursery practitioners shaped by OU research"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Research by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/people\/nc4338\">Dr Natalie Canning<\/a>, Senior Lecturer of Early Childhood and Co-Director of The Open University\u2019s (OU) <a href=\"https:\/\/wels.open.ac.uk\/research\/childrens-research-centre\">Children\u2019s Research Centre<\/a> has helped shape a new framework for early childhood practitioners.<\/p>\n<p>Created in partnership with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.interactivelearningdiary.co.uk\/\">Interactive Learning Diary<\/a>, the \u2018Empowerment Framework\u2019 can be used by practitioners to observe and analyse children\u2019s play and activities to look for indicators of empowerment and learning.<\/p>\n<p>Through a better understanding of children\u2019s behaviour, practitioners will be able to focus on activities that are more beneficial to children\u2019s development.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Canning\u2019s research about child empowerment and supporting children to explore personal, social and emotional development through play, has formed the basis of the framework, which is already being piloted in a number of UK nurseries.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dr Canning commented:<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cEmpowerment in child-initiated, social play is not one single action, event or circumstance. It is concerned with examining individual choices and decisions based on social interactions, emotional responses and environmental influences within situated boundaries and resources. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThere are essential components that contribute to young children\u2019s experiences of empowerment. This new framework addresses all of these components in a simple, easy-to-use way.\u201d <\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Dr Canning believes that the three key themes that empower children in play are participation, voice and ownership.
