{"id":23005,"date":"2023-02-28T16:09:18","date_gmt":"2023-02-28T16:09:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ounews.co\/?p=23005"},"modified":"2023-02-28T16:09:18","modified_gmt":"2023-02-28T16:09:18","slug":"ou-bbc-co-production-goes-behind-the-scenes-of-the-leeds-teaching-hospitals-nhs-trust","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/education-languages-health\/ou-bbc-co-production-goes-behind-the-scenes-of-the-leeds-teaching-hospitals-nhs-trust\/","title":{"rendered":"OU\/BBC co-production goes behind the scenes of the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Saving Lives in Leeds, a new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/\">BBC<\/a> documentary, produced with the support of two OU academics, features the challenging work of doctors and surgeons at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leedsth.nhs.uk\/\">Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHT Trust.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The eight-part series airs on Wednesday 1<sup>st<\/sup> March, 9pm on BBC Two and shows the tough dilemmas that doctors face each day behind the scenes, doing a job that affects so many people\u2019s lives.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/people\/cel27\">Cathy Lloyd<\/a>, Professor of health studies and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/people\/jm22787\">Julie Messenger<\/a>, senior lecturer in nursing at The Open University, were the academic consultants for the series.<\/p>\n<p>The series meets a group of world-leading doctors and surgeons at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, which includes Leeds General Infirmary that has been saving lives for over 250 years, and St James\u2019s University Hospital.<\/p>\n<p>The programme sees them battle through their ever-increasing waiting lists to transform the lives of their patients and decide who to treat next.<\/p>\n<p>It features in-depth interviews and life-changing operations, from operating on brain tumours; performing cardiac surgery on babies; providing life-saving liver treatment and carrying out a high-risk double hand transplant.<\/p>\n<p>Julie Messenger said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThis case study approach allows us to showcase materials within our nursing programmes, specifically to highlight the needs of different patient groups, interprofessional working and values driven behaviour.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAudiences will see care reflect from childhood through to old age. Underpinning all aspects, we see a highly motivated, but at times exhausted workforce \u2013 keen to do their best for each person. There are some case studies included which may bring you to tears.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt points it serves as a stark reminder of the complex challenges faced by many.
