{"id":23459,"date":"2023-05-26T11:41:42","date_gmt":"2023-05-26T10:41:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ounews.co\/?p=23459"},"modified":"2023-05-26T11:41:42","modified_gmt":"2023-05-26T10:41:42","slug":"springwatch-the-wildlife-lovers-favourite-returns-to-our-screens","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/around-ou\/tv-radio\/springwatch-the-wildlife-lovers-favourite-returns-to-our-screens\/","title":{"rendered":"Springwatch \u2013 the wildlife lovers\u2019 favourite \u2013 returns to our screens"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A new series of the BBC\u2019s popular <em>Springwatch<\/em> is about to make its annual appearance on our screens and this time it\u2019s produced in partnership with The Open University and comes from a brand new location &#8211; the RSPB Arne Nature Reserve in Dorset.<\/p>\n<p>Chris Packham, Michaela Strachan, Iolo Williams and Gillian Burke return to present the <strong>BBC2<\/strong> programme from <strong>Monday, 29 May<\/strong> <strong>at 7.30pm<\/strong>. It will continue from <strong>Tues, 30 May at 8pm<\/strong>, and then Mon \u2013 Thurs evenings for three weeks of <strong>live<\/strong> programmes in total, exploring live locations and witnessing dramas as they happen.<\/p>\n<p>As usual, the audience will be invited to join the conversation and watch as the season\u2019s renewal, rebirth and awakening emerges.<\/p>\n<p>At this time of year, the nature reserve comes alive with rare breeding birds, specialised heathland insects and all six of the UK\u2019s native species of reptiles, all with a backdrop of Poole Harbour.<\/p>\n<p>Viewers will be able to see a new array of live-nest cameras and a range of pre-recorded films that capture wildlife throughout the year but producers say they won\u2019t shy away from some of the hard-hitting truths and challenges affecting our wildlife.<\/p>\n<p>The programme makers, who have consulted with OU academics on the series, will explore ancient oak woodlands, farmland and reedbeds as well as mudflats, scrub, wet woodland and acid grassland at Arne.<\/p>\n<p>Dr <a href=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/people\/mb32425\">Marcus Badger,<\/a> Senior Lecturer in Earth Sciences, said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cIt\u2019s a great privilege to work with and support the BBC Springwatch team. It\u2019s such an iconic programme that shapes how we see the world around us. I\u2019m proud to offer my expertise as a Climate Scientist and Geologist.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Dr <a href=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/people\/yna3\">Yoseph Araya<\/a>, Senior Lecturer in Ecology and Environmental sciences, said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cIn times of numerous global environmental challenges, it has never been more important to look around and appreciate the many wonders that happen close to our homes. Springwatch just does that by raising awareness, sparking interest and building closeness to everyday nature.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And Ms Liz Wright, Staff Tutor and Lecturer in Geography and Environmental Studies, added:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cThe value of Springwatch lies in its ability to communicate the incredible variety and wonder of the natural world in which us as humans exist alongside other animals and life forms.
