{"id":23659,"date":"2023-07-06T09:30:22","date_gmt":"2023-07-06T08:30:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ounews.co\/?p=23659"},"modified":"2023-07-06T09:30:22","modified_gmt":"2023-07-06T08:30:22","slug":"education-report-highlights-challenges-of-complex-learning-environments","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/education-languages-health\/education-report-highlights-challenges-of-complex-learning-environments\/","title":{"rendered":"Education report highlights challenges of complex learning environments"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This year\u2019s future of education report highlights 10 promising innovations facing learners and educators over the coming years.<\/p>\n<p>The I<em>nnovating Pedagogy 2023 <\/em>report, produced by academics in the OU\u2019s Institute of Educational Technology and the Centre for Innovation in Learning and Teaching at the University of Cape Town, focuses on the challenges where learning takes place across a combination of physical and virtual spaces.<\/p>\n<p>This is the 11<sup>th<\/sup> report in a series co-produced by the OU which researches innovations in teaching, learning and assessment.<\/p>\n<p>The reports are intended for teachers, policy makers, academics, students, researchers, designers of educational technology, and for anyone who is interested in pedagogical innovation and how education is changing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In her introduction to the report, lead author, <a href=\"https:\/\/iet.open.ac.uk\/people\/agnes.kukulska-hulme\">Agnes Kukulska-Hulme<\/a>, OU Professor of Learning Technology and Communication, says:<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cThis year we have \u2018pedagogies using AI tools, \u2018relational pedagogies\u2019 and \u2018entangled pedagogies of learning spaces\u2019, along with approaches highlighting entrepreneurship and education in the Metaverse.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>She also jokes that the authors were briefly tempted to ask ChatGPT to write the report but (happily), it is not capable of doing so.<\/p>\n<p>The potential for ChatGPT, the best-known Generative AI tool, to change educational practice is\u00a0 discussed in the section on <em>Pedagogies using AI tools, <\/em>as well as raising many issues that will need to be addressed, not least, the possibility of students handing in work generated by these tools.<\/p>\n<p>The other nine trends are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Challenge based learning<br \/>\n<\/strong>Rising to challenges to benefit individuals and societies<\/li>\n<li><strong>Multimodal pedagogy<br \/>\n<\/strong>Enhancing learning by diversifying communication and representation<\/li>\n<li><strong>Entrepreneurial education<br \/>\n<\/strong>Students as change agents in society<\/li>\n<li><strong>Metaverse for education<br \/>\n<\/strong>Educational opportunities through fully immersive 3D environments<\/li>\n<li><strong>Seeing yourself in the curriculum<br \/>\n<\/strong>Pedagogies enabling students to see themselves in the curriculum<\/li>\n<li><strong>Podcasts as pedagogy<br \/>\n<\/strong>Embedding podcasts in teaching and learning practices<\/li>\n<li><strong>Entangled pedagogies of learning spaces<br \/>\n<\/strong>Connecting technology, pedagogy and all elements of a learning context<\/li>\n<li><strong>Pedagogy of care in digitally mediated settings<\/strong><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong>Prioritising the well-being and development of students<\/li>\n<li><strong>Relational pedagogies<\/strong><br \/>\nWorking relationally in and across disciplinary and professional boundaries<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Commenting on the overall report, Professor Kukulska-Hulme said<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cAll this seems to represent what can be described as a trend towards \u201ca multiplicity of technologies, methods and modalities\u201d available for a learning experience, meaning that several media and modes of communication and delivery can support teaching, learning and assessment across a range of contexts and spaces.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIt makes for a potentially complex teaching and learning environment where student activity needs to be \u2018orchestrated\u2019, as explained in our section on \u2018Entangled pedagogies of learning spaces\u2019 in this report.
