{"id":2448,"date":"2016-03-10T17:19:37","date_gmt":"2016-03-10T16:19:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ounews.co\/?p=2448"},"modified":"2016-03-10T17:19:37","modified_gmt":"2016-03-10T16:19:37","slug":"ou-mission-mars","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/science-mct\/space\/ou-mission-mars\/","title":{"rendered":"On a mission to Planet Mars"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Establishing whether the planet Mars has ever supported life is one of the great unanswered questions of modern science.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday 14 March 2016, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.esa.int\/ESA\">European Space Agency (ESA)<\/a> will be launching its ExoMars Mission to investigate the environment of the Red Planet.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/exploration.esa.int\/mars\/46475-trace-gas-orbiter\/\">ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter (TGO)<\/a>, which is due to launch from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.russianspaceweb.com\/baikonur.html\">Baikonur, Kazakhstan<\/a>, for a seven month journey to Planet Mars, will transport an on-board lab to identify methane gas emissions; this could indicate whether life-forms.<\/p>\n<p>Co-leading on <a href=\"http:\/\/exploration.esa.int\/mars\/48523-trace-gas-orbiter-instruments\/\">NOMAD (Nadir and Occultation for MArs Discovery)<\/a> with academics from three other higher education and research institutions** is The Open University Department of Physical Sciences.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, we interviewed Senior Lecturer, Department of Physical Sciences at The Open University and\u00a0Co-Principal Investigator of the NOMAD instrument, <a href=\"#www.open.ac.uk\/research\/main\/people\/mrp76\">Dr Manish Patel<\/a>.
