{"id":24619,"date":"2024-01-29T16:32:51","date_gmt":"2024-01-29T16:32:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ounews.co\/?p=24619"},"modified":"2024-01-29T16:32:51","modified_gmt":"2024-01-29T16:32:51","slug":"university-challenge-awaits-for-ou-team-tonight","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/around-ou\/university-challenge-awaits-for-ou-team-tonight\/","title":{"rendered":"University Challenge awaits for OU team tonight"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A team of students from The Open University take the good wishes of their fellow scholars and OU staff with them tonight, Monday 29 January, when they take part in the first round of three quarter-final matches in University Challenge at 8.30pm on BBC Two.<\/p>\n<p>The four-person Team Open, plus a reserve team member, are one of eight teams to get this far and tonight they face Trinity College, Cambridge, to answer questions on a wide range of subjects from literature\u00a0to music\u00a0and sport.<\/p>\n<p>Team Open includes\u00a0Ellie Romans, a nursing student, Mike Holt studying an Open Degree, Ann Gavaghan (captain) studying Art History and James Davidson studying English Literature.<\/p>\n<p>Their achievement represents the furthest a Team Open has reached since OU students\u00a0David Good, John Burke, Sue Mitchell and Lance Haward\u00a0won\u00a0in 1999\u00a0(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.oustudents.com\/get-involved\/university-challenge\/our-history\/\">find out more on our history on\u00a0University Challenge\u00a0here<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Each year, the team is selected by The Open University Students Association and there is a story discussing <a href=\"https:\/\/thehootstudents.com\/team-open-quarter-finals\/\">the team\u2019s performance so far<\/a> in the programme.<\/p>\n<p>Lara Munday, Projects Officer for The Open University Students Association, who has been closely following the team\u2019s progress, said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cWe\u2019re delighted that this fantastic team of OU students have progressed to the quarter finals of University Challenge.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cHaving not met each other in person until their interview day, they enthusiastically practiced online together and became a team from afar. They have done themselves and the OU community proud.
