{"id":25077,"date":"2024-05-07T15:46:12","date_gmt":"2024-05-07T14:46:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ounews.co\/?p=25077"},"modified":"2024-05-07T15:46:12","modified_gmt":"2024-05-07T14:46:12","slug":"financial-nutrition-podcasts-set-to-help-transform-your-money-outlook","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/arts-social-sciences\/financial-nutrition-podcasts-set-to-help-transform-your-money-outlook\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Financial nutrition\u2019 podcasts set to help transform your money outlook"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Two Open University academics on a quest to urge people to indulge in daily \u2018financial nutrition\u2019 have released a podcast series to provide exactly that.<\/p>\n<p>Their \u2018Financial Five-a-Day\u2019 podcast is a series of interviews with financial experts, who have excelled in their field.<\/p>\n<p>They share their expert tips to help ignite a rethink in the way everyone approaches their spending, saving and investment habits.<\/p>\n<h2>Reforming spending habits<\/h2>\n<p>Today, UK rental properties cost an average of \u00a31,220 per month, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zoopla.co.uk\/discover\/property-news\/average-rent-uk\/\">Zoopla<\/a>, and the average home is now <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zoopla.co.uk\/discover\/property-news\/house-price-index\/\">\u00a3263,900<\/a>, out of reach for many people unless they can change their income or spending habits.<\/p>\n<p>Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/people\/gsc4\">George Callaghan<\/a> and Senior Lecturer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/people\/mrh27\">Dr Martin Higginson<\/a>, both experts in Economics and Personal Finance at the OU, are hoping the podcasts will help people navigate not just their immediate financial future but one that looks much further ahead \u2013 towards a comfortable retirement.<\/p>\n<h2>Financial educators<\/h2>\n<p>The podcasts are being hosted on the OU\u2019s free education platform <a href=\"https:\/\/www.open.edu\/openlearn\/money-business\/economics\/the-financial-five-day-podcast-series\">OpenLearn<\/a>, Spotify and Apple podcast platforms and include experts well-known in their field such as Alvin Hall, financial educator and broadcaster, who Generation X will recall from a BBC Series \u2018<em>Your Money or your Life<\/em>\u2019.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_25091\" style=\"width: 89px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-25091\" class=\"wp-image-25091 \" src=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/George-Callaghan-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"79\" height=\"119\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/George-Callaghan-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/George-Callaghan-683x1024.jpg 683w, https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/George-Callaghan-768x1152.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/George-Callaghan.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 79px) 100vw, 79px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-25091\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Professor George Callaghan<\/p><\/div>\n<p>George said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cThese are the most challenging times for 40 years for households. Now we live in a world where a pint of milk costs in excess <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ons.gov.uk\/economy\/inflationandpriceindices\/timeseries\/cznt\/mm23\">of 65p, in 2020 it was about 35p<\/a>, and this kind of price increase has not been experienced for a generation.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIt\u2019s a climate where people saving for their futures are having more and more of their disposable income consumed by eye-watering rental payments and many have given up on owning property that could give them the security they yearn in later life. Adjusting your thinking to how you spend money on a daily basis can be transformational.&#8221;\u00a0<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div id=\"attachment_25080\" style=\"width: 114px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-25080\" class=\"wp-image-25080 \" src=\"https:\/\/ounews.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Dr-Martin-Higginson-229x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"104\" height=\"136\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-25080\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr Martin Higginson<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Martin said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cThese podcasts are designed to make people take a long hard look at how they are using their money and many of our interviewees say that knowing what you want your life to look like as a mature adult is the key.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThis is vital because it dictates what you might buy, how you might save or invest, and how you might approach debt.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe podcasts are full of tips that you can adopt and they challenge people to contemplate what their end goal is going to look like and whether they want their money to work for them, rather than they work for money.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The \u2018Financial Five-a-Day\u2019 \u00a0research forms part of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/societal-challenges.open.ac.uk\/challenges\/financial-5-a-day\/134\">OU\u2019s Open Societal Challenges Programme,<\/a>\u00a0which aims to tackle some of the most important societal challenges of our time through impact-driven research that will transform lives and drive societal change.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Two Open University academics on a quest to urge people to indulge in daily \u2018financial nutrition\u2019 have released a podcast series to provide exactly that.
