{"id":25262,"date":"2024-06-10T13:02:02","date_gmt":"2024-06-10T12:02:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ounews.co\/?p=25262"},"modified":"2024-06-10T13:02:02","modified_gmt":"2024-06-10T12:02:02","slug":"a-million-digital-tourists-descend-on-ancient-pompeii","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/arts-social-sciences\/a-million-digital-tourists-descend-on-ancient-pompeii\/","title":{"rendered":"A million digital \u2018tourists\u2019 descend on ancient Pompeii"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A digital team at The Open University are celebrating after learning their interactive online tour of Pompeii before Mount Vesuvius erupted has notched up more than a million online clicks.<\/p>\n<p>Designers within the OU\u2019s Broadcast and Partnerships team were delighted when they learned of the interactive figures, just a month after the airing of the OU\/BBC co-production of <a href=\"https:\/\/ounews.co\/arts-social-sciences\/open-university-classics-experts-advice-on-pompeii-dig\/\">Pompeii: the new dig<\/a> in April.<\/p>\n<p>Viewers of the programme, now available on iPlayer, created in consultation with OU academics, saw how archaeologists were uncovering more secrets about the lives of people who perished in the volcanic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD79.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_25265\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-25265\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-25265\" src=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/iStock-183241860-v2-300x196.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"196\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/iStock-183241860-v2-300x196.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/iStock-183241860-v2-768x502.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/iStock-183241860-v2.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-25265\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Forum as it is today<\/p><\/div>\n<p>And they were then invited to follow the links to the <a href=\"https:\/\/connect.open.ac.uk\/history-and-the-arts\/pompeii\">OU Connect<\/a> site, to take part in an interactive online journey to explore and learn what Pompeii was like before the eruption.<\/p>\n<p>Digital marketing expert and designer Steff Easom worked closely with academics Phil Perkins, Professor of Archaeology, and Dr Emma-Jayne Graham, Senior Lecturer in Classical Studies, who were key to the project.<\/p>\n<p>Steff said she was thrilled that months of work had reaped the rewards and thanked the two academics who were so instrumental: \u201cThey gave tonnes of feedback offering their specialist knowledge and opinion on the animations used.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She said their intricate knowledge was invaluable, down to the removal of sunflowers and tomatoes on the mural wall of a digitally reconstructed bar since they were not available in the region at the time. \u201cEverything was historically accurate,\u201d added Steff.<\/p>\n<p>Emma-Jayne said: \u201cVisiting Pompeii simply isn\u2019t possible for everyone, so it is really fantastic to know that we\u2019ve been able to bring the ancient ruins into the homes of so many people through this interactive tour.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And Phil added: \u201cOnce we\u2019d come up with the concept of virtual reconstructions of the city\u2019s buildings introduced by a time-travelling city guide, the challenge was to keep it authentic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMeticulous research into both cutting-edge research and discoveries made and published over 150 years ago, together with brilliant interactive design, brought the reconstructions to life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If you want to visit Pompeii digitally visit our <strong>Broadcast &amp; Partnerships site<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/connect.open.ac.uk\/history-and-the-arts\/pompeii\"><strong>OU Connect<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Picture credits: main picture of The Forum, The Open University; picture in the text from Ary6\/iStock<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A digital team at The Open University are celebrating after learning their interactive online tour of Pompeii before Mount Vesuvius erupted has notched up more than a million online clicks.
