Entering the job market at the age of 14, Gary never imagined a career in Law was within reach, until he discovered The Open University.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Unlocked potential<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Gary always assumed that leaving school before he had the chance to gain qualifications would hold him back in life, despite knowing he had the ability to do more. A few years later, Gary attended a lecture with his partner who was studying Law at their local university.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI understood everything the tutor was talking about, and I was hooked,\u201d Gary remembers. \u201cI wanted to learn more and see how far I could go &#8211; that\u2019s when I discovered the OU.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At 26, when Gary came to learn that higher education was a possibility for him, he was determined to make it work.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFinding a university that saw my abilities rather than a lack of qualifications allowed me to believe in myself,\u201d Gary shares. \u201cI was the first person in my family to go to university but at the OU, I never felt judged. Even at the beginning when the quality of my writing wasn\u2019t where it needed to be, the tutors gave me feedback and supported me to improve.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Pulling through<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Gary\u2019s OU journey wasn\u2019t always plain sailing \u2013 with imposter syndrome and a failed module to overcome, his resolve was tested.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI failed one module miserably and I felt like giving up, but when I have a difficult decision to make, I always ask myself the same question \u2013 will this be something I\u2019ll regret when I\u2019m 40?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gary adds, \u201cI knew that if I hadn\u2019t carried on, I\u2019d never forgive myself. The great thing about OU tutors is that they explain where you went wrong. They want you to succeed and encourage you to keep going.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Overcoming challenges<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Still caring full time for his mother, Gary found ways to carve out time for his studies wherever possible.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt wasn\u2019t easy. I could only study when my mum was sleeping or when a family member came to help out,\u201d says Gary. \u201cBut I loved my subject. Despite having so much to juggle, working towards my degree was the best experience. It gave me something else to occupy my mind and allowed me to focus on myself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/courses\/law\/degrees\/bachelor-of-laws-llb-r81\">Bachelor of Laws<\/a> and a Masters from Nottingham Trent University under his belt, Gary is now an experienced Social Welfare Lawyer. Based at Derbyshire Law Centre, Gary is proud to represent those who are unable to fund legal costs.<\/p>\n<p>Keen to inspire others to unlock their potential, Gary shares his advice for anyone considering studying with the OU.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf your education suffered because of your start in life, there are access courses you can take. Don\u2019t be scared if you don\u2019t have A levels or even GCSE\u2019s, I didn\u2019t,\u201d explains Gary.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJump in with both feet. Don\u2019t have any preconceptions or judgements. Choose a topic you\u2019re interested in and remember the OU is flexible &#8211; if you don\u2019t like the subject you\u2019re studying, you can change it. Most of all have fun! Take it from me &#8211; when you graduate, you\u2019ll miss it, I do every day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reflecting on everything he\u2019s achieved, Gary shares what his OU experience means to him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe OU not only boosted my career prospects, it made me more confident, articulate and allowed me to change my lifestyle,\u201d says Gary. \u201cI owe everything I\u2019ve achieved in my career to the OU.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Gary\u2019s top tips for OU study<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>\u201cImposter syndrome will reduce over time \u2013 <\/strong>but if it creeps in again, remember what you\u2019ve achieved and how far you\u2019ve come.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cThink about what makes you happy<\/strong> \u2013 OU study is amazing but it\u2019s hard, you need to make the time and money you\u2019re investing count!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cGet your family and friends involved, they\u2019ll lift you when you need it<\/strong> \u2013 my partner would pull me away when it got too much and make me relax in front of rubbish TV for a bit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cLearn from your mistakes<\/strong> \u2013 speak to your tutors, listen to the feedback and pick yourself back up, you can do it!\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As a young carer with considerable responsibilities at home, Gary\u2019s secondary education was cut short.
