{"id":25320,"date":"2024-06-18T09:47:46","date_gmt":"2024-06-18T08:47:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ounews.co\/?p=25320"},"modified":"2024-06-18T09:47:46","modified_gmt":"2024-06-18T08:47:46","slug":"ou-academics-to-feature-on-the-bbcs-morning-live-programme","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/arts-social-sciences\/ou-academics-to-feature-on-the-bbcs-morning-live-programme\/","title":{"rendered":"OU academics to feature on the BBC\u2019s Morning Live programme"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Two Open University academics are to feature this week in the BBC\u2019s Morning Live programme on Wednesday and Thursday 19 and 20 June to explore the psychology of climate change and \u00a0distracted driving.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Trudi Macagnino and Professor Gemma Briggs are the OU consultants involved in two short informative films due to air during the programme that starts at 9.30am, weekdays on BBC One.<\/p>\n<p>Trudi, who is a staff tutor in the OU\u2019s School of Psychology and Counselling, was the OU consultant on a film <em>Eco Wins<\/em>, being transmitted on 19 June, that addresses the psychology of why people might feel dispirited and helpless about climate change leading them to disengage from the problem.<\/p>\n<p>It addresses the very real \u2018climate anxiety\u2019 that, according to the Office for National Statistics, three out of four of us feel. But the footage aims to leave viewers with uplifting and positive examples of where our everyday actions can help to alleviate our climate anxiety as well as contributing to reducing the country\u2019s carbon footprint.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Trudi said: \u201cWe worked closely together to achieve a balance between the tone of the programme and the research on the impact of the climate and ecological crisis on our mental health.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And on Thursday 20 June a film called <em>Distracted driving<\/em> airs featuring Professor Gemma Briggs, Head of Discipline and Professor of Applied Cognitive Psychology at the OU.<\/p>\n<p>Gemma conducts research into how drivers\u2019 attention and perception can be affected when they use a hands-free phone behind the wheel.<\/p>\n<p>She was the OU consultant on the film<em>,<\/em> which demonstrates research findings showing that hands-free phone use is different from conversation with a passenger as it causes cognitive distraction, which can lead to increased crash risk and failure to notice hazards.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Gemma said: \u201cThe film shows that conventional wisdom about hands-free phone use being \u2018safe&#8217; isn\u2019t sound, and explains why this is the case.
