{"id":25381,"date":"2024-07-10T12:54:08","date_gmt":"2024-07-10T11:54:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ounews.co\/?p=25381"},"modified":"2024-07-10T12:54:08","modified_gmt":"2024-07-10T11:54:08","slug":"changing-your-mind-and-the-relevance-of-confirmation-bias","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/around-ou\/tv-radio\/changing-your-mind-and-the-relevance-of-confirmation-bias\/","title":{"rendered":"Changing your mind and the relevance of \u2018confirmation bias\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An Open University academic is behind a short film on the BBC\u2019s Morning Live programme that featured a fascinating experiment before the General Election on \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/connect.open.ac.uk\/society-psychology-and-criminology\/morning-live\">changing your mind\u2019<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/people\/jajt5\">Dr Jim Turner<\/a>, Senior Lecturer in Forensic Psychology at the OU, is one of a team of OU academics who has inspired one of six short films made in a partnership between OU and the BBC.<\/p>\n<p>This film features a concept known as \u201cconfirmation bias\u201d to see how easy people find it to change their mind.<\/p>\n<p>As Dr Turner explains in the film, confirmation bias \u201cis a bias that causes you to look for information that confirms things that you already believe\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The BBC brought together a small panel of volunteers from across the UK\u2019s political spectrum to take part in a small-scale test of confirmation bias.<\/p>\n<p>Jim worked with the BBC team to design the test, in which the volunteers were asked to assign political policy statements to the party they thought they came from. Fascinating, because I got to see the kind of planning and practical film-making stuff that, as TV viewers, we normally don&#8217;t know about.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cReassuring, because the BBC team at every stage were really committed to accuracy, fairness, and an overall ethical treatment of the topic.
