{"id":25675,"date":"2024-09-05T17:00:22","date_gmt":"2024-09-05T16:00:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ounews.co\/?p=25675"},"modified":"2024-09-05T17:00:22","modified_gmt":"2024-09-05T16:00:22","slug":"celebrations-as-the-ou-wins-university-of-the-year-for-teaching-excellence-in-daily-mail-awards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/around-ou\/celebrations-as-the-ou-wins-university-of-the-year-for-teaching-excellence-in-daily-mail-awards\/","title":{"rendered":"Celebrations as the OU wins \u2018University of the Year for Teaching Excellence\u2019 in Daily Mail awards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Open University is celebrating its win in the Daily Mail\u2019s second ever university guide for picking up the award for \u2018University of the Year for Teaching Excellence\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>The win comes barely two months after the <a href=\"https:\/\/ounews.co\/around-ou\/university-news\/the-ou-continues-to-perform-above-national-average-in-teaching-satisfaction-national-student-survey-2024\/\">National Student Survey<\/a> (NSS) showed the OU received scores higher than the sector average for teaching, organisation and management, assessment and feedback, and learning resources.<\/p>\n<p>Alastair McCall, Editor of the Daily Mail University Guide, said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cThe Open University is a unique \u2013 and treasured \u2013 feature of the British Higher Education landscape.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cA pioneer of distance learning, the OU has been doing for more than 50 years what many universities are only now getting to grips with in allowing students to fit their studies around the rest of their life.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>He added:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cWhat has been evident for the past 19 years, since the inception of the National Student Survey, is quite how highly OU students rate the quality of the teaching they experience during their years of study.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestudentsurvey.com\/\">NSS results<\/a>, commissioned by the Office for Students (OfS), showed the OU has continued to perform particularly well for its\u00a0teaching and learning offer, with over 90% of students naming courses \u2018intellectually stimulating\u2019 and responding positively on how teaching staff explain content.<\/p>\n<p>And more than 92% of students responded positively when asked about receiving their assessment feedback on time \u2013 nearly 13% higher than the sector average.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Ian Pickup, Pro Vice Chancellor \u2013 Students\u00a0at The Open University, said of the university guide success:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em> \u201cThis is wonderful news, not just for the hardworking staff that have helped us become such a treasured part of the Higher Education sector, but for students who are investing their time, effort and finances in studying at the OU.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cOur students, often people who have grabbed our \u2018open to all\u2019 mission and embarked on a new path, tell us how life changing their degrees have been for them. Now we are delighted to see many more younger students joining our ranks.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIt is a privilege and an honour that our students give such wonderful feedback via the NSS, and we will ensure we continue to do everything to remain worthy of this.
