Gaining a science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) degree has always been her dream and she hopes to inspire other women to join the industry.

“I’ve loved the science subjects since I was young, which is why I started an engineering degree here in Malta. But unfortunately, it wasn’t the right fit, so I dropped out after two years,” Fallon shares.

“I then fell into the arts and went onto get a job as an interpreter. Yet at the back of my mind, I always regretted not completing my journey into STEM.

“I didn’t want to sacrifice the security of my role to study full-time, which is why the OU was the perfect solution. I could continue to build my career in languages, while satisfying my urge to study the sciences.”

Studying at her own pace

The OU provided Fallon with the flexibility to thrive in her studies, even while studying in different countries from her fellow students. She was able to complete her degree in her free time and build her knowledge and skill set in the process.

“I like to work at my own speed and the OU has really suited this way of learning. Obviously, I have deadlines to work towards, but the way I reach those goals is up to me.

“I can have as much or as little support from my tutors as I need. All my tutorials are recorded, so if I can’t make the live session, I can easily listen back.

“Maths can be a tricky subject to study. Sometimes it takes a few readings to digest information, but once you get it, it can be beautiful. Every moment of discovery in my degree has given me a new spark of enthusiasm for STEM.

“I’m passionate about the sciences, especially when it comes to getting more women into the industry. We’re underrepresented, but we have so much to give.”

Becoming an OU graduate

Fallon at her graduation ceremony

Fallon celebrated finishing her degree at the OU’s graduation ceremony in London. You might not have had the opportunity to achieve your ambitions the first-time round, but the OU will give you a second chance.

“I’ve still been able to work, travel and have a social life – and now I have the degree in Maths that I always wanted.”

Find your perfect course

Join students like Fallon and discover the subject that sparks your passion.
