{"id":27129,"date":"2025-05-02T12:18:03","date_gmt":"2025-05-02T11:18:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/?p=27129"},"modified":"2025-05-02T12:18:03","modified_gmt":"2025-05-02T11:18:03","slug":"london-marathon-why-you-need-a-plan-to-prevent-the-post-race-blues","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/education-languages-health\/london-marathon-why-you-need-a-plan-to-prevent-the-post-race-blues\/","title":{"rendered":"London marathon: why you need a plan to prevent the post-race blues"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As the sun rises over the river Thames on marathon day this year, tens of thousands of cheering spectators will fill the streets and a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/sports\/athletics\/london-marathon-set-break-record-biggest-field-2025-03-13\/\">record-breaking<\/a> 56,000 adrenaline-fuelled runners will gather at the starting line of the TCS London marathon, says Helen Owton, Lecturer in Sport and Fitness.<\/p>\n<p>At the start of the gun, the stampede of runners will surge forward bringing the streets of London alive with the rhythmic thud of trainers, the sweat of determination, and the roaring of the crowd shouting: \u201cCome on, you can do it!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The race isn\u2019t just about competition; it\u2019s a celebration of perseverance, passion and overcoming adversity.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/sport\/articles\/cgj5yg0wwvzo\">\u201cEvery marathon is up and down, very emotional\u201d<\/a>\u00a0says \u201cBritain\u2019s bladerunner\u201d double Paralympic gold medallist Richard Whitehead, who holds the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.londonmarathonevents.co.uk\/london-marathon\/article\/44-guinness-world-records-titles-achieved-at-the-2024-tcs-london-marathon\">Guinness World Record<\/a>\u00a0for fastest double amputee marathon in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>At the finish line, exhaustion is mixed with triumph and runners share in a sense of collective achievement.
