{"id":27262,"date":"2025-05-20T17:08:44","date_gmt":"2025-05-20T16:08:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/?p=27262"},"modified":"2025-05-20T17:08:44","modified_gmt":"2025-05-20T16:08:44","slug":"powerful-new-ou-bbc-documentary-tells-the-story-of-the-murder-of-george-floyd-and-the-backlash-that-followed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/around-ou\/tv-radio\/powerful-new-ou-bbc-documentary-tells-the-story-of-the-murder-of-george-floyd-and-the-backlash-that-followed\/","title":{"rendered":"Powerful new OU\/BBC documentary tells the story of the murder of George Floyd and the backlash that followed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Airing on Wednesday 21<sup>st<\/sup> May on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/bbctwo\">BBC Two<\/a> at 9pm and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/iplayer\">BBC iPlayer<\/a>, <strong><em>Blacklash: The Murder of George Floyd\u201d \u00a0<\/em><\/strong>tells the story of one of the most shocking and defining moments in modern history, one that not only exposed police brutality and birthed the Black Lives Matter movement, but also exposed deep divides in the UK over matters of race.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/profiles.open.ac.uk\/lara-frumkin\">Professor of Psychology, Lara Frumkin<\/a>, and<a href=\"https:\/\/profiles.open.ac.uk\/philip-seargeant\"> Senior Lecturer in Applied Linguistics and Languages, Philip Seargeant,<\/a> were the academic consultants for the film.<\/p>\n<p>They said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cThis timely documentary navigates a sensitive societal issue that has reached a critical point. By showing footage from Black Lives Matter protests and interviews with George Floyd\u2019s family, police and citizen activists, this authentic\u00a0and at times raw film provides insights into the experiences of black citizens in the UK and the US. It balances helplessness and power, action and repression, resulting in an emotive retelling of what happened five years ago in the murder of George Floyd and Black Lives Matter movement.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0To support the documentary,\u00a0we also developed a short video highlighting an understanding of slogans such as Black Lives Matter.
