{"id":27393,"date":"2025-06-10T16:41:39","date_gmt":"2025-06-10T15:41:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/?p=27393"},"modified":"2025-06-10T16:41:39","modified_gmt":"2025-06-10T15:41:39","slug":"trumps-use-of-the-national-guard-against-la-protesters-defies-all-precedents","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/arts-social-sciences\/trumps-use-of-the-national-guard-against-la-protesters-defies-all-precedents\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump\u2019s use of the National Guard against LA protesters defies all precedents"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Dr Sinead McEneaney, Senior Lecturer in History at The Open University, debates President Trump&#8217;s latest stance in LA against protesters over immigration raids and shares the historical background regarding the Insurrection Act and National Guard.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Violence has erupted on the streets of cities across southern California over the weekend, as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2025\/06\/08\/us\/la-immigration-protests-photos-map.html\">protesters clashed with agents<\/a> from the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency detaining people they suspected to be illegal immigrants, notes<\/p>\n<p>The US president, Donald Trump, took the unusual decision on Saturday to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/presidential-actions\/2025\/06\/department-of-defense-security-for-the-protection-of-department-of-homeland-security-functions\/\">deploy 2,000 troops from California\u2019s national guard<\/a>, despite not being requested to by the state\u2019s governor, Gavin Newsom.<\/p>\n<p>Newsom has\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/7292191\/trump-newsom-national-guard-california-los-angeles-protests-legal-challenge\/\">threatened to sue Trump<\/a>\u00a0over what he has called \u201can illegal act, an immoral act, an unconstitutional act\u201d. Other California officials\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.ca.gov\/2025\/06\/08\/icymi-california-stands-united-against-chaotic-and-inflammatory-federal-takeover-of-california-national-guard-unit\/\">have also denounced<\/a>\u00a0the move, with Senator Adam Schiff\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SenAdamSchiff\/status\/1931536364065247309\">calling it<\/a>\u00a0a \u201cdangerous precedent for unilateral misuse of the guard across the country\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Raids by ICE agents have increased significantly since mid-May when the Trump administration\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/may\/29\/trump-ice-arrest-quota\">threatened to fire senior ICE officials<\/a>\u00a0if they did not deliver on higher arrest quotas.
