{"id":27522,"date":"2025-07-15T15:31:37","date_gmt":"2025-07-15T14:31:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/?p=27522"},"modified":"2025-07-15T15:31:37","modified_gmt":"2025-07-15T14:31:37","slug":"the-connect-initiative-empowering-the-next-generation-for-global-digital-co-operation-through-sci-tech-diplomacy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/around-ou\/university-news\/the-connect-initiative-empowering-the-next-generation-for-global-digital-co-operation-through-sci-tech-diplomacy\/","title":{"rendered":"The CONNECT Initiative: empowering the next generation for global digital co-operation through sci-tech diplomacy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.connect-science.net\/\">CONNECT initiative<\/a>, led by The Open University and discussed during <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unesco.org\/en\/articles\/unesco-hosts-global-gathering-advance-science-diplomacy-peace\">UNESCO\u2019s Science Diplomacy Dialogue and Global Education events<\/a>, is being recognised as a flagship example of capacity-building in scientific and technological diplomacy.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.connect-science.net\/\">CONNECT<\/a> is a project aiming to support secondary schools to adopt open schooling, integrating science-action in the core-curriculum and using participatory-science with families, universities and enterprises.<\/p>\n<p>With more than 50,000 students engaged across five countries, CONNECT illustrates how young people can co-create solutions to global challenges by combining emerging technologies, collaborative problem-solving, and diplomatic skills.<\/p>\n<p>Using the <a href=\"https:\/\/research.open.ac.uk\/news\/science-matters-how-care-know-do-model-transforms-education\">CARE\u2013KNOW\u2013DO framework<\/a> \u2013 an open schooling approach where schools work with families and experts to solve real problems, students \u2014 especially from underserved communities, climate-affected regions, rural areas, semi-arid zones, and Indigenous territories \u2014 collaborate with scientists, educators, and civil society to co-develop real-world scientific and technological solutions to issues across the globe.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>CARE <\/strong>encourages students to value sustainability, justice, and equity.<\/li>\n<li><strong>KNOW <\/strong>focuses on building critical, evidence-based understanding of issues.<\/li>\n<li><strong>DO <\/strong>invites students to take action\u2014communicating, collaborating, and innovating to address real-world problems.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Some of the issues that have been tackled using this approach are microplastic pollution, gender injustice, mental health, and climate change.<\/p>\n<p>Combining local knowledge and global technologies, the success of these projects show how education can become a <strong>channel for diplomacy<\/strong><strong>,<\/strong> equity, and sustainable development\u2014one that is youth-led, locally grounded, and globally impactful.<\/p>\n<p>The Care Know Do framework was developed by <a href=\"https:\/\/profiles.open.ac.uk\/ale-okada\">Dr Alexandra Okada,<\/a> Associate Professor at The Open University. She said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cThis is tech diplomacy in action. When students lead co-creation processes rooted in local realities and global challenges using emerging technologies, they\u2019re not just learning \u2014 they\u2019re building the digital co-operation of the future.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Dr Okada added: <em>\u201cOpen schooling fosters creativity, critical thinking, and civic engagement. It empowers young people to become changemakers, ready to shape a fairer, more resilient society\u2014one where democracy is experienced, not just explained.<\/em> <em>The call to action is clear.
