{"id":27669,"date":"2025-09-01T10:00:58","date_gmt":"2025-09-01T09:00:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/?p=27669"},"modified":"2025-08-29T14:48:40","modified_gmt":"2025-08-29T13:48:40","slug":"new-ou-bbc-podcast-series-the-team-behind-the-team","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/education-languages-health\/sport\/new-ou-bbc-podcast-series-the-team-behind-the-team\/","title":{"rendered":"New OU\/BBC Podcast series \u201cThe Team behind The Team\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A new OU\/BBC podcast <em>The Team Behind the Team<\/em>, launches on BBC Sounds and BBC 5Live Sport on Monday 1 September.<\/p>\n<p>The four-part series, presented by the BBC\u2019s Katie Smith, explores what goes into helping athletes and teams perform at an elite level.<\/p>\n<p>It features in-programme contributions from Open University academics whose subjects range from sports performance to coaching and sport, and exercise science.<\/p>\n<p>In episode one, Professor of Sports Performance Education <a href=\"https:\/\/profiles.open.ac.uk\/ben-oakley\">Ben Oakley<\/a> explains how\u00a0performance directors have become prominent in Olympic sports, how they attempt to implement a\u00a0team\u2019s shared values and how the role is different from being a national coach.<\/p>\n<p>He said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cPerformance directors are the architects of systems to identify athletes and then create the coaching, medical and sports-science specialists that provide input to performance.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Episode two, looks at the role of data and how it is used to inform coaching and training. In the programme Dr <a href=\"https:\/\/profiles.open.ac.uk\/ben-langdown\">Ben Langdown<\/a> &#8211; Senior Lecturer in Sports Coaching, explains what is measured as golfers look for an\u00a0edge and the potential pitfalls of data.<\/p>\n<p>While Dr Nichola Kentzer, Senior Lecturer in Sport, Exercise and Coaching, explains some of the ethical dilemmas around the use of data in sport.<\/p>\n<p>Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the focus of episode three and features Dr <a href=\"https:\/\/profiles.open.ac.uk\/mark-antrobus\">Mark Antrobus<\/a>, Senior Lecturer in Sport and Exercise Science, who has conducted research into AI and the future\u00a0of sport science.<\/p>\n<p>He discusses how AI is currently being used in sport and how its potential future use, while Dr Kentzer outlines the pros and cons of AI when it comes to\u00a0athlete welfare.<\/p>\n<p>The final episode of the series poses the question \u2018Is sport becoming less human?\u2019 Dr Alex Twitchen shares how his background in coaching and the coach\/athlete relationship has changed over the years.<\/p>\n<p>He said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cSport is essentially a competition between individuals who have feelings, emotions and empathy.
