{"id":28128,"date":"2026-01-22T12:10:55","date_gmt":"2026-01-22T12:10:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/?p=28128"},"modified":"2026-01-22T12:10:55","modified_gmt":"2026-01-22T12:10:55","slug":"professor-teresa-cremin-cbe-delivers-keynote-speech-at-national-year-of-reading-launch","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/around-ou\/professor-teresa-cremin-cbe-delivers-keynote-speech-at-national-year-of-reading-launch\/","title":{"rendered":"Professor Teresa Cremin, CBE, delivers keynote speech at National Year of Reading launch"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Professor Teresa Cremin, CBE delivers keynote speech at National Year of Reading launch <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Professor of literacy, Teresa Cremin,\u00a0CBE,\u00a0delivered an inspirational keynote speech at the <a href=\"https:\/\/goallin.org.uk\/\">National Year of Reading 2026 launch<\/a>, where she called for everyone to \u201cGo all in Together\u201d to help more young people discover the joy of reading.<\/p>\n<p>In her speech, Professor Cremin, set out why reading for pleasure matters and its association with\u00a0fostering a broad knowledge of the world, enriching vocabulary, cognitive\u00a0growth, psychological well-being, imagination, empathy, social mobility and relational connections.<\/p>\n<p>She noted\u00a0the\u00a0well-documented\u00a0decline in reading for pleasure in recent years, calling\u00a0for more strategic, intentional\u00a0efforts to reverse it and highlighted that the National Year of Reading 2026 is an opportunity to do this.<\/p>\n<p>In proposing reading resolutions for 2026, Teresa issued a rallying call\u00a0to\u00a0everyone\u00a0involved in children\u2019s lives\u00a0\u2013 teachers, parents,\u00a0volunteers, librarians, and others, stating:<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u201cTo build a nation of readers, within and well beyond this year, we need to be working strategically and responsibly. So, let&#8217;s\u00a0 Go All in Together\u2019 strategically and responsibly, \u2013 our young people deserve no less\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Professor Cremin, leads the OU\u2019s\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/ourfp.org\/\">Reading for Pleasure<\/a>\u00a0Research and Practice Coalition\u202f-\u00a0a community hub, co-created with and for teachers, student teachers,\u00a0librarians\u00a0and all those interested in developing the habit of reading in young people.<\/p>\n<p>The National Year of Reading 2026 is a Department for Education initiative, delivered by the National Literacy Trust in collaboration with\u00a0a range of delivery partners to inspire more people to make reading a regular part of their lives.
