Applications are now open<\/strong> for anyone injured or disabled in or as a result of military service, who could benefit from the truly life-changing opportunity to study for free<\/strong> at The Open University.<\/p>\n

The Disabled Veterans’ Scholarship Fund (DVSF), which is supported by generous donations from OU alumni, businesses and supporters of the University, has provided the opportunity to access free, flexible higher education to 393 veterans since its launch in 2018, with a further 30 places available for the 2026\/27 academic year.<\/p>\n

For many disabled veterans, who often have limited previous educational qualifications, additional access needs through their injury or disability, or restrictions when it comes to attending a traditional brick university, The Open University is the perfect place to pursue their goals and rewrite their stories.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo anyone thinking of applying for an OU scholarship, I would say absolutely go for it. I didn\u2019t think university was in my path, and now I\u2019m here, five years down the line, about to get my degree. It\u2019s been an amazing journey.\u201d \u2013 <\/em>Stuart, DVSF recipient<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Last year alone, around\u00a028,000 disabled students were registered with the OU, highlighting the University\u2019s commitment towards equity, and its capacity for supporting those with a disability. As a part of their scholarship, students will also be able to access specialist disability support, and bespoke careers support for up to three years post-study.<\/p>\n

Part of that is just explaining to people \u2013 be they donors, academic staff or even potential students \u2013 that this is a great way to further your education and further your career, and I can be a real-life example of how that\u2019s made a difference.”<\/em> – David Dent, DVSF recipient and Ambassador<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

DVSF is one of five essential schemes within the Open Futures Fund, a bespoke scholarships programme supporting people from five distinct groups \u2013 disabled military veterans, unpaid carers, lower-income Black students, those seeking sanctuary in the UK, and people who have spent time in the care system. Through these vital scholarships, futures are being rewritten each year through the remarkable power of education.<\/p>\n

“Since its launch in 2018, the Disabled Veterans’ Scholarship Fund has helped nearly 400 applicants build confidence, gain qualifications, and acquire the tools needed to translate their military background into success in civilian employment. I am delighted that this Open University programme complements the Government’s Veterans Strategy, in recognising veterans as a national asset with the skills to contribute to the UK economy.\u201d<\/em> – Louise Sandher-Jones MP, Minister for Veterans and People<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
