{"id":3399,"date":"2016-06-10T21:43:04","date_gmt":"2016-06-10T20:43:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ounews.co\/?p=3399"},"modified":"2016-06-10T21:43:04","modified_gmt":"2016-06-10T20:43:04","slug":"learning-lifelong-experience-sir-david-cannadine-tells-ou-graduates","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/around-ou\/learning-lifelong-experience-sir-david-cannadine-tells-ou-graduates\/","title":{"rendered":"\u201cLearning is a lifelong experience\u201d Sir David Cannadine tells OU graduates"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of the UK\u2019s leading historians, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/David_Cannadine\">Sir David Cannadine<\/a>, has told OU graduates that the university has \u201cirrevocably transformed higher education for the better\u201d as he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate at a ceremony in Manchester today.<\/p>\n<p>Sir David joined more than 250 OU students collecting their qualifications at Manchester\u2019s Bridgwater Hall, alongside social justice campaigner and political activist, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Margaret_Prosser,_Baroness_Prosser\">Baroness Margaret Prosser <\/a>OBE.<\/p>\n<p>Sir David Cannadine is one of the UK\u2019s pre-eminent scholars, collecting a host of awards and accolades throughout his career. His passion for history was sparked by an inspirational teacher, and he has a long-standing interest in the way the subject is now taught in schools.<\/p>\n<p>Addressing the assembled OU graduates, Mr Cannadine reminded them that learning does not stop at the end of a qualification. He said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cThe habit of curiosity, and the desire to learn, which have been nurtured and encouraged during your time as OU students, are things that should stay with you for ever. There are always new things to learn, new ideas to engage with, new viewpoints to assimilate and to explore.\u00a0 Truly, learning is a lifelong experience, and as the graduates of the one British university pre-eminently dedicated and devoted to that mission, I hope that is something you will never forget.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The full text of the address is available <a href=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Cannadine-Address-FINAL.pdf\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The award was presented by the OU\u2019s Director of Communications, Lucian Hudson, who said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cSir David\u2019s work is astonishingly broad as well as deeply learned, stretching across social, cultural, economic, political and imperial history. We are delighted to honour her life and her contribution to social justice and equality of opportunity in Britain.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nPeople from all walks of life, of all ages and backgrounds, from a spectrum of careers and industries also gathered to celebrate achieving their degrees with The Open University.
