The ExoMars Orbiter is carrying an instrument with <a href=\"https:\/\/ounews.co\/science-mct\/space\/ou-mission-mars\/\">significant OU involvement<\/a> which will hunt for methane gas emissions and which could signal the presence of life-forms in Mars\u2019 past.<\/p>\n<p>Here, during what\u2019s known as the mid-cruise check-out \u2013 a half way health check for the mission \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/people\/mrp76\">Dr Manish Patel<\/a> explains what the ExoMars mission is, using a small model of the spacecraft, and why friendly banter between colleagues in Belgium mean it\u2019s 1-0 to England\u2026<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/player.open.ac.uk\/embed\/d3880e6ae2\" width=\"480\" height=\"270\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The European Space Agency\u2019s ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter (TGO) launched on 14th March, carrying with it the Schiaparelli lander to demonstrate Europe\u2019s first ever landing on Mars later this year.<\/p>\n<p>It lifted-off from Baikonur, Kazakhstan, carrying an instrument called <a href=\"http:\/\/exploration.esa.int\/mars\/48523-trace-gas-orbiter-instruments\/?fbodylongid=2187\">NOMAD ( Nadir and Occultation for Mars Discovery)<\/a>, which is able to \u2018sniff out\u2019 trace gases in the atmosphere of Mars to detect whether signs of life exist, the development of which was co-led by academic Dr Manish Patel, an OU Senior Lecturer in Physical Sciences, alongside colleagues in the UK and Belgium.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3437\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3437\" id=\"longdesc-return-3433\" class=\"wp-image-3437 size-medium\" tabindex=\"-1\" src=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/CROP-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"A model of the ExoMars Orbiter.\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" longdesc=\"https:\/\/ounews.co?longdesc=3433&amp;referrer=3430\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/CROP-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/CROP.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-3437\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A model of the ExoMars Orbiter. The real version is around 50 times bigger than this one.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>This week saw what\u2019s described at the mid-cruise check-out, when data is beamed from the spacecraft to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.esa.int\/ESA\">European Space Agency<\/a> and sent to teams working at The Open University\u2019s Walton Hall campus in Milton Keynes, and to colleagues from the Belgian Institute for Space Aeronomy, for review.<\/p>\n<p>Sat around a big screen on campus, Dr Patel and his colleagues Dr Jon Mason and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/people\/mrl67\">Dr Mark Leese<\/a> from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/science\/physical-science\/\">OU Department of Physical Sciences<\/a>, are currently analysing the data to review the mission.
