{"id":3515,"date":"2016-06-21T12:12:30","date_gmt":"2016-06-21T11:12:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ounews.co\/?p=3515"},"modified":"2016-06-21T12:12:30","modified_gmt":"2016-06-21T11:12:30","slug":"ou-urges-focus-skills-older-workers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/around-ou\/ou-speaks-out\/ou-urges-focus-skills-older-workers\/","title":{"rendered":"OU urges focus on skills for older workers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Open University has issued a call to businesses to ensure their workforce has the skills they need to remain competitive throughout all stages of their careers.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on BBC Radio 4\u2019s flagship <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/programmes\/b006qj9z\">Today Programme<\/a>, the OU\u2019s Director of External Engagement Steve Hill told listeners that, with around a third of the UK workforce aged over 50, it was more important than ever that employers made sure their staff had access to the right skills and training for a changing work environment.<\/p>\n<p>In April, the Government <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/attachment_data\/file\/513801\/Working_Futures_final_evidence_report.pdf\">published a report<\/a> which suggests the total number of jobs in the UK is expected to rise by 1.8 million by 2024. Upskilling these individuals ensures that corporate memory remains within the company, whilst also keeping the business relevant and employees engaged. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;This is particularly true in areas where skill requirements are changing quickly, such as digital technologies and cyber security.
