{"id":3701,"date":"2016-07-12T10:40:49","date_gmt":"2016-07-12T09:40:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ounews.co\/?p=3701"},"modified":"2016-07-12T10:40:49","modified_gmt":"2016-07-12T09:40:49","slug":"praise-bbc-ou-series-refugees","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/around-ou\/tv-radio\/praise-bbc-ou-series-refugees\/","title":{"rendered":"Praise for ground-breaking OU\/BBC series following refugees"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last night saw the first episode of a new BBC2 series which follows the journeys of 70 refugees as they aim to leave conflict or persecution and make their way into Europe.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3708\" style=\"width: 380px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3708\" class=\" wp-image-3708\" src=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/ISRAA_ABUSALAA2-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"12 year-old Isra'a &amp; her family feature in the documentary\" width=\"370\" height=\"247\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/ISRAA_ABUSALAA2-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/ISRAA_ABUSALAA2-1024x684.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/ISRAA_ABUSALAA2-768x513.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/ISRAA_ABUSALAA2-1536x1026.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/ISRAA_ABUSALAA2-2048x1368.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 370px) 100vw, 370px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-3708\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">12 year-old Isra&#8217;a &amp; her family feature in the documentary<\/p><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/programmes\/b07ky6ft\">Exodus: Our Journey to Europe<\/a> was produced in partnership with The Open University, with three leading OU academics acting as consultants on the programme.\u00a0 Much of the footage was shot over the course of a year by the refugees themselves.\u00a0 Armed with smartphones, they were able to capture intimate moments as they prepared for a dangerous sea crossing in a dinghy, as well as other challenges as they attempt to travel into Europe.<\/p>\n<p>The first episode has been warmly received by critics, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/tv-and-radio\/2016\/jul\/12\/exodus-our-journey-europe-review-bbc-documentary-bbc\">The Guardian<\/a> calling it \u201cambitious, necessary, and devastating documentary-making.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/tv\/2016\/07\/11\/exodus-our-journey-to-europe-revealed-the-terrifying-reality-of\/\">Daily Telegraph<\/a> labelled it \u201can astonishingly intimate, and at times palpably scary, portrait of desperation.\u201d\u00a0 Its review went on to describe some of the more surprising insights offered by the documentary:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>None of this was easy viewing. But it was often surprising. Isra\u2019a and her family lived not in a camp but an apartment in Izmir.
