{"id":4205,"date":"2016-10-11T09:49:28","date_gmt":"2016-10-11T08:49:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ounews.co\/?p=4205"},"modified":"2016-10-11T09:49:28","modified_gmt":"2016-10-11T08:49:28","slug":"social-learning-specialist-honoured-at-ou-degree-ceremony","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/around-ou\/university-news\/social-learning-specialist-honoured-at-ou-degree-ceremony\/","title":{"rendered":"Social learning specialist honoured at OU degree ceremony"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Open University has honoured social learning theorist Dr Etienne Wenger-Trayner for his exceptional contribution to society by awarding him an honorary degree.<\/p>\n<p>A globally-recognised thought leader in the field of social learning theory, communities of practice and their application to organisations, Dr Wenger-Trayner\u2019s work influences both theory and practice in a wide range of disciplines.<\/p>\n<p>A growing number of organisations in the private and public sector \u2013 including business, education, government and healthcare \u2013 now see the cultivation of communities of practice as a key component of a work-based learning strategy. Whilst in education, his work has inspired a new line of research focusing on the social nature of learning and its connections to communities, social practice and identity.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Mark <a href=\"http:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/people\/mpf9\">Fenton-O\u2019Creevy<\/a>, co-authored a recent book with Dr Wenger-Trayner said: \u201cHis work has had very wide impact on approaches to social learning theory but also to developments in practice-based learning and professional learning more widely.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In business and government, his research has revolutionised the field of knowledge management and organisational learning.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The co-authored book, <a href=\"http:\/\/jime.open.ac.uk\/articles\/10.5334\/jime.as\/\">Learning in Landscapes of Practice<\/a>, with Dr Wenger-Trayner, Beverly Wenger-Trayner, Chris Kubiak and Steve Hutchinson, builds on his work on communities of practice and the OU\u2019s research at its centre for Practice-based Professional Learning.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Wenger-Trayner was awarded an honorary doctorate at the OU\u2019s Gateshead degree ceremony on Saturday 24th September.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Open University has honoured social learning theorist Dr Etienne Wenger-Trayner for his exceptional contribution to society by awarding him an honorary degree.
