{"id":4781,"date":"2016-12-13T17:32:31","date_gmt":"2016-12-13T16:32:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ounews.co\/?p=4781"},"modified":"2016-12-13T17:32:31","modified_gmt":"2016-12-13T16:32:31","slug":"ou-wins-four-athena-swan-awards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/around-ou\/university-news\/ou-wins-four-athena-swan-awards\/","title":{"rendered":"OU wins four gender equality Athena SWAN Awards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Open University\u00a0has collected four Bronze <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ecu.ac.uk\/equality-charters\/athena-swan\/\">Athena SWAN<\/a> awards, \u00a0in recognition of its\u00a0ongoing commitment to gender equality for all staff and students across the newly launched (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) <a href=\"http:\/\/stem.open.ac.uk\/\">STEM <\/a>faculty.<\/p>\n<h2>Commitment to extending equality scheme<\/h2>\n<p>Chair of the OU&#8217;s STEM Gender Equality Group (SGEG), <a href=\"http:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/people\/ch2264\">Dr Clem Herman<\/a>, said she was thrilled to have led the faculty on such an incredible journey.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Athena SWAN applications demand huge amounts of commitment from so many people across the departments submitting, as well as the wider university. Receiving four awards is great news, not only for the STEM department, but for the entire university &#8211; indeed one of our commitments is now to extend the scheme and good practice in gender equality to non-STEM areas of the university.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The awards\u00a0given at a ceremony last night (12th December) were:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Renewal of the OU&#8217;s Institution Bronze status<\/li>\n<li>School of Computing &amp; Communications &#8211; Bronze award<\/li>\n<li>School of Engineering &amp; Innovation &#8211; Bronze award<\/li>\n<li>School of Life, Health and Chemical Sciences &#8211; Bronze award<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The School of Physical Sciences (SPS) received an Athena SWAN Silver award earlier this year. SPS is the first OU department to be awarded Silver status, recognising its activities towards reducing inequalities in research, teaching and day-to-day department processes.
