{"id":5591,"date":"2017-07-05T10:40:03","date_gmt":"2017-07-05T09:40:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ounews.co\/?p=5591"},"modified":"2017-07-05T10:40:03","modified_gmt":"2017-07-05T09:40:03","slug":"ou-brings-astronomical-telescope-world-class-site-students-home","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/science-mct\/space\/ou-brings-astronomical-telescope-world-class-site-students-home\/","title":{"rendered":"OU brings astronomical telescopes to students in their home"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>The OU\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/stem.open.ac.uk\/\"><em>Faculty of STEM<\/em><\/a><em>\u00a0is celebrating the inauguration of its remotely-controlled robotic telescopes, which will bring astronomy and space science to life for students whenever and wherever they are in the world.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>For almost half a century, the OU has been developing the latest digital technology to enhance the learning experience of students. The inauguration of our new remotely-controlled and robotic telescopes, COAST and <a href=\"http:\/\/pirate.open.ac.uk\/\">PIRATE<\/a> will provide students with an interest in astronomy and space sciences the opportunity to operate professional telescopes as part of their studies, from their laptops, PCs, and smartphones.<\/p>\n<p>The robotic telescopes, based at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iac.es\/eno.php?op1=3&amp;lang=en\">Observatorio del Teide<\/a> on the island of Tenerife, are part of a \u00a35.4 million initiative to develop the award-winning\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/about\/teaching-and-learning\/esteem\/TheOpenSTEMLabsconcept\">OpenSTEM Labs<\/a>. 50% funded by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hefce.ac.uk\/\">HEFCE<\/a>, the OpenSTEM Labs offer an \u201cInternet of Laboratory Things\u201d, which is accessible to distance learning students at all hours.<\/p>\n<p>Senior Lecturer at the School of Physical Sciences, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/people\/uck2\">Dr Ulrich Kolb<\/a>, said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe marvels of the Universe have always sparked imagination, and our fascination with studying them has really pushed the boundaries of what we can achieve through technological innovation.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Why shouldn\u2019t students at the OU be able to experience the same capabilities and technologies from the comfort of their home as researchers do from their workplaces?
